According to Variety, New Line has acquired the rights to Microsoft's video game, Gears of War, and plans to develop a feature film.

The story, which is being written by Stuart Beattie (Collateral), will be based on the video game which is about a world reeling from an invasion by aliens known as the Locust.  In the game, a small group of elite soldiers, including the main character Marcus Fennix, who is rescued from prison at the beginning of the game, fight to retake the planet Sera for its surviving humans.

The game has sold over 3 million copies and is considered a huge hit for the XBox 360.

KJ's Take:  Could be very cool if done right.  They got a solid screenwriter, which is a very good sign, but it is still a video game adaptation, so be wary.

so far, we didn t see a real good game adaptation....let s wait, soon many of them will be release. Doom was so bad.........

the game has such a thick plot and VERY heavy dialogue so it would be VERY easy to do this project right. Hopefully they dont go the way of DOOM and completely alter the already well laid story!

I AM EXCITED!

With Halo in development hell, I don't see this happening.

But it does sound like a cool premise, more so than Halo (anyone else hate how Halo 2 went? ugh).

This could be great. Seeing some of those giant Locust horde monsters on the big screen would be amazing. I just hope they don't go and cast some WWE star in the main role. That usually dooms a film from the start.

Like it or not, a movie based on a video game is just that. a movie based on a video game. What the eff do people expect? the first Mortal Kombat was fun, so are the Resident Evil movies. Doom was fun. But then again, I don't go into movies like this expecting a masterpeice, so I always get what i want........ENTERTAINMENT!!!
(As long as Uwe Bowll hasn't been involved, he kills video game movie adaptations faster than a fat chick kills hard-ons.)

Now who could play Fennix??? Sheez...

The first Mortal Kombat was surprisingly fun. I personally enjoy the Resident Evil films. And, let me tell you, DoA is very much fun too. Corny, but great fight scenes.

Uwe Boll's skills are drastically improving - Alone in the Dark was leaps and bounds above House of the Dead, and Bloodrayne was a masterpiece compared to House of the Dead.
Of course, Bloodrayne was still very bad. Maybe by Boll's 10th film he'll be at b-movie quality. Course, do we want him massacring even 1 more property?

This game, though I never played it, looked amazing--graphics-wise, any how. Which kinda begs this question:

It's obvious why studios want to make movies out of popular video games ($$$$$), but why do fans want them? I find it more fun to play the games than to watch a flick based off of it. And with graphics getting as life-like as they are (as I said, this particular game blew me away), it's not like we need to see these guys in flesh and blood.

Merin, come on buddy! Come on! You are a better man than me to even consider trying to defend Uwe Boll`s and I use the word very loosely "skills" as a director. He has to be one of the worst directors of all time. He could learn a thing or two from Ed Wood.

I sat through BloodRayne praying that my eyes would stop bleeding long enough to turn off the dvd player. Alone in the Dark and House of the Dead were just as bad if not worse.
What I can`t stand mostly about Boll , besides his lack of directing chops, is his cockiness. He truly thinks he is a great director. He reminds me of a religious extremist. He has full confidence in what he is doing is right.
Anyway, this seems like a cool idea but as Halo isn`t going anywhere, why would this go through the fast track?

This could get going faster than Halo because, it is not owned by Microsoft for starters. It is made by the company who did Unreal Tournament. That means different team pushing it. One of the problems with Halo is distribution being that Microsoft is a competitor to Sony. GOW could be made without any limitations because while it is on 360 it is not in itself a Microsoft game like Halo.
