Summit Entertainment has announced that The Twilight Saga: New Moon's home entertainment release has sold just over 4 million DVD units in its first weekend of release. The tally surpasses the first weekend sales of Twilight in 2009 which sold 3.8 million DVD units, and went on to be the top selling DVD title of the year with 9.2 million units sold. The DVD launch of "New Moon" commenced this past Saturday morning with 7,000 retail locations nationwide taking part in events at midnight giving fans their first chance to obtain a DVD of the film.

Thousands of "Twilight" fans across the nation participated in the "'New Moon' at Midnight" event and some were treated to surprise appearances by members of the cast as well as the film's director. Fans saw actors Justin Chon who plays Eric, Christian Serratos who plays Anglea, and Michael Welch who plays Mike in Salt Lake City; director Chris Weitz and Nikki Reed who plays Rosalie Hale in Los Angeles; Peter Facinelli who plays Dr. Carlisle Cullen in New York; Edi Gathegi who plays Laurent in Pittsburgh; and Liz Reaser who plays Esme Cullen in Phoenix. Other cast members of The Twilight Saga: New Moon made appearances nationwide including Kiowa Gordon and Tinsel Korey in Cincinnati; Charlie Bewley in Denver; Chaske Spencer and Tyson Houseman in Atlanta; Daniel Cudmore in Houston; and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg in Seattle.

Summit Entertainment's Co-Chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger stated, "Once again the incredibly dedicated fans of the 'Twilight Saga' came out in massive numbers this weekend for the opportunity to be one of the first take home the second movie in the series. As we have said all along, the fans are what make this franchise and we once again thank them for their support."

"The support that we have received from our retail partners in accommodating the incredible demand for the title has been nothing short of amazing," said Steve Nickerson, Summit's President of Home Entertainment. "The ground we have broken with in-store partnerships and the availability of this title has been a positive influence on the retail DVD business."

The Twilight Saga: New Moon grabbed $705 million worldwide since opening last November. The third installment, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse will be released in theaters throughout North America on June 30, 2010.

What no blu ray sales?  Twilight fans prob know that seeing the movie in HD shows all the flaws of the movie.

ah the fresh scent of guys hating Twilight...

you slam it and then wonder why it's so popular...

well here's the answer -- because of guys just like you...it's a terribly vicious cycle

yes, I have my copy of New Moon, and you ask about Blu? every where I went the Blu shelves were stripped clean

so good luck with your caveman existence...

LOL @ Dazzler

Well lets put it this way movies like Twilight and its sequels have zero credibility once they sell Tshirts and hoodies of characters that only teenage girls buy! Sure marvel has clothes that little kids wear but we are talking about comicbook super heros not pictures of pale men and women that u can barely tell are vampires..lol So Effing LAME!!!

so star wars has more with the shirts it sells to only guys?

you've split your own argument darkknight....

you might as well just come out and say guys and comic books are more important than what girls enjoy

This really doesn't surprise me despite how bad the movies really are..

I remember a south park epsiode that dealt with this kinda of delima- It was called THE RING- a major spoof on the Jonas brotherswatch this epsiode from season 13 and youll understand why new moon is so popular with young teen girls. I wont give anything away but there is one scene in the show at a jonas concert that says it all.

After seeing New Moon it's fairly obvious Michael Sheen needed some coke money, it's the only explanation why he got involved in this.

Seen plenty of hotties at Star Wars cons and in public wearing star wars gear. Plus they are all of age Starlight...so ur little point it null and void. You are VERY alone on this subject (when it comes to twilight), if it wasnt for Jarod writing about it it prolly wouldnt get reported on here on mania.com... PLus i could give a crap what girls enjoy, its the fact that Twilight is a sappy love story that girls (mostly teens) love. I have had no problems saying twilight sucks, my GF agrees with me. We are True Blood fans :)

Good for New Moon and the people that bought it... Personally it is one of the worst movies I have ever saw.

I saw the movie in a theater with the wife and had to bang my head against the wall many times to get the feeling back in my body!

This is how I picture you guys when I read your negative twilight comments...

Your all Tim the Tool man Taylors...(nerd style)

[grunts & ape like sounds]  'I don't like twilight cause i'm a man!' [more grunts & ape like sounds]

[grunts & ape like sounds]  'Joining my fellow internet nerds in a chorus of twilight hate is as close to manhood as I can get' [grunts & ape like sounds]

For me - I've always liked vampire/werewolf movies... and this series is just another style, different but not better than the likes of blade, underworld or even bram stoker's Dracula.

It's written by & aimed at the other sex - which i'm pretty sure take up just over 50% of the worlds population. They have just as much right to enjoy & make popular a movie franchise as men do.  So stop being surprised or even angry when a movie aimed at women does as well or better than your favourite comic book movie(which I can guarantee women don't understand anymore than you understand twilight)

I liked both movies.  There are some painfully corny lines in them - but you ignore that & look at whats good in something that has to be better than watching 'the notebook' with your mrs.
