Is Lucasfilm and Disney making all the right moves? It certainly seems so. Deadline.com is reporting that the director of Looper and Brick, Rian Johnson, has been tapped to direct and write (well the treatment for the IX) the next TWO Star Wars Episode films!

Michael Fleming of Deadline.com had the Exclusive story!

Rarely have I seen the revival of a film franchise stir so much fervor as Star Wars, among hot young filmmakers who grew up loving George Lucas’ original film trilogy. In a bombshell move, I’m told that Lucasfilm is making a deal with Looper writer-director Rian Johnson to write and direct Star Wars Episodes VIII and IX. Essentially, that means that the intention is for Johnson to take the baton from JJ Abrams, who has gotten the space franchise off the ground and is right now helming Episode VII. I don’t know too much more at this point, but it is in keeping with Disney and Lucasfilm’s strategy of entrusting the venerable franchise to the best and brightest writers and directors, including the spinoff films that are being directed by Chronicle‘s Josh Trank and Godzilla‘s Gareth Edwards”.

Rian Johnson hasn’t made an official statement about helming the next two movies with producer Ram Bergman (who also produced Brick and Looper). As a fan of both of those films, I cannot wait to see what he does with the Star Wars Universe. Johnson did post the following Youtube clip on his Twitter.

Digging the choices Disney is making for directors.  I thought Looper was cool and he also directed the Breaking Bad episode Ozymandias which is one of hte best if not the best episode of that series.

Also, does this mean JGL will pop in one of the Episodes?

I though the same thing Hanso. Perhaps he will be another big baddie.

F UCK! Looper's plot had more holes in it than a block of swiss cheese.  Prediction... Episode 7 will be 10 times better than 8 and 9.

Not sure how I feel about this. it brings up more questions then answers.

Why would Abrams not at least be in negotiations for the other two? DOes he hate it? Do they dislike what he's doing now?

Im not disrespecting this director, but can he handle a movie like Star Wars? Thats a HUGE leap from Brick and Looper.

Yeah, it's kind of weird that Abrams is not committing to the other two. I thought Star Wars was his dream project more than Trek?

I'm guessing maybe Abrams doesn't want to be locked up in the compressed Disney schedule of a movie every two years. That would tie him up until 2019. The dude has other stuff to work on.

@ELBAZ13 I agree with your last statement. I am sure Abrams has other projects. A guy like him has multiple ideas and probably wants to keep spreading his wings. Though, I can maybe see if Episode 7 just banks, the company may want Abrams back, or a joint collaboration.

Sounds good to me. His style seems different than the way the SW movies are done but I'm sure he'll adapt.

Sounds good to me. Was never a big fan of Abrahms. But, I will give him his props; he did a great job with the last two Trek films.  He just come off as Spielberg lite to me.

i thought Brick and Looper where good films. I think this guy will bring some gravitas to the story. His Star Wars film will be the equivalent of The Empire Strikes Back in the first trilogy of Star Wars films.

Never before in history have we had such detailed advanced knowledge of things to come!!  We know what films are coming out in 2019!!!!  It's crazy that they are thinking this far ahead already without even seeing how ep7 looks or feels, but it's the obvious way to go, pre plan like a mofo and hopefully avoid rushed or shabby attempts to rebirth this franchise.  I like Rian Johnson, maybe even a little more than JJ.......I'm liking these bold moves Disnucasfilm!

Not a fan-atic. I was 30 when the first movie was released so the flicks are not tied to my care free childhood memories, but I did take my kids to see the first three releases. Found them to be nice family entertainment which reminded me of the Cowboys, Army, Pirates and Knights action movies of my youth... Relatively simple plots with antiseptic violence...great art direction and cutting edge effects (for the time). I hope this next barrage of movies maintains the same light hearted good vs. evil feel to them that the originals had, so today's kids will be as thrilled to see these movies as their parents were when they watched the predecessors when they were young.
