The Superman Homepage has reported Time Warner is working on new DVDs of the five SUPERMAN films released between 1978 and 1987.

Ilya Salkind, who co-produced the first three SUPERMAN films, SUPERGIRL, and the SUPERBOY television series, confirmed that he is indeed working with Michael Thau, the Producer and Restoration Supervisor on the 2001 Special Edition of SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE, and others who've been retained by Time Warner to produce new versions of the original Superman films (and Supergirl) for DVD release in conjunction with marketing plans for 2006's SUPERMAN RETURNS.

"[T]he five DVDs are coming out," Salkind said in a recent telephone interview. Along with his late father, Alexander, and childhood friend, Pierre Spengler, Salkind produced the original SUPERMAN films (all except 1987's SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE produced by the Canon Group in a one-shot film deal they had with the Salkinds).

GRAGGHHH!!! I just bought all of these, too. Now I'll have to buy them again (Well, 1 & 2, especially if it's the Donner cut). Have to ask tho, whovis actually chomping at the bit for 3 & 4 and Supergirl?

Am I the only one who gets annoyed with a new special edition dvd comin out constantly.. I love the superman, the movie dvd already have and won't be buying another..not sure what else they add on that one as far as "special features" that would make it any better. Maybe a feature length commentary from one of the camera operators who's still alive? Ooooo! Yea!

It's not just that you'll have to buy the new DVDs but then you'll have to buy the HD versions too. It's getting to the point now where if a new release of a movie comes out on DVD there will undoubtedly be another, better version coming out. I'm frickin' tired of buying something and then having to buy it again 6 months later. It's a load of crap.

That being said, I'd like to see what Warner Bros. comes up with and if they release the Richard Donner version of Supe 2 instead of the crap regular version.

The only time it really bothers me is when they add new material to the movie. I don't care what they do with the bonuses. I would imagine that Superman 2 will be most affected because fans have been looking for an extended version since its original DVD release. Superman 1 is already extended, right? And I can't imagine there being enough cut footage anywhere that would make Supes 3 & 4 a worthwhile investment, hehehehe.

I am sure glad that I do'nt buy movies when they come out, just think, I was about to buy Superman: the movie at Sam's Wholesale club for $5, I think I will just wait.

Honestly, after the batman anthology boxset was announced I immediately thought that Supes was next. So I waited. Personally I think this next box set will be a good one to get. It will be special editions of all the movies with commentary, extended editions, (probably) and extra features like the batman one. Trust me, the Batman one kicks ass. It is honestly the best special editions of movies i've seen in a while, (minus the Alien Quadrillogy, thats the best).

As for the HD argument. You know that the first HD discs out will just be quick HD transfers with no bonus or little bonus material. Then, a few years later they'll release ones WITH bonus material. For me, the DVD versions WITH bonus material will do fine. Unless I have tons of money to but new HD versions with bonus features a few years down the road.

Do you realise how silly some of you guys sound? You make it sound like you 'have' to buy it ....! ...in fact that's what some of you say explicitly. Why don't you calm down and think maturely for a second. There will always be re-releases - this is nothing new.Why don't you just decide to buy it in say ten years which seems like a reasonable amount of time to wait for a second purchase. I too believe you'll probably then have the proper HD release, not just the first offering they'll undoubtedly dispatch. Either stick with what you've got or wait a set time before buying again -do not pander to the studio suits who are working for their share-holders interests.

I have to agree, Cap'n. It unnerves me that they re-release a feature that I already own, and then I get the "gotta-see-ums" when it's a Director's Extended Ultimate Collector's Criterion Masterpiece Edition.

But then I found Netflix. Instead of purchasing the film, I get it from Netflix upon release. I wait roughly 6 months, and then a Director's Cut is released that Netflix doesn't carry (because they already carry the original release).

Case in point: Hellboy, Underworld, Daredevil, Elektra, Dodgeball. All of them had "extended director's cut" releases that I was really interested in seeing, but Netflix isn't carrying them. I actually bought the Daredevil Director's Cut (since it was on sale for $5) and it made a horrible movie a mediocre one.

Moral of the story: Daredevil still sucked. Oh, and Fanboys will always fill the purses of the studios with re-releases, but for those of us with a head on our shoulders, all you need to do is wait roughly 6 months. And join Netflix.
