The rumors have come to end and we now, officially, have a new title for the third and final Hobbit movie. Previously, the title was going to be The Hobbit: There and Back Again. Now the final Lord of the Rings film will be known as The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Check out the reasoning why below. There are also new details on the extended version of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

From Peter Jackson’s Facebook post:

Our journey to make The Hobbit Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo's own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we've gone along. “There and Back Again” felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced—after all, Bilbo has already arrived “there” in the "Desolation of Smaug".

When we did the premiere trip late last year, I had a quiet conversation with the studio about the idea of revisiting the title. We decided to keep an open mind until a cut of the film was ready to look at. We reached that point last week, and after viewing the movie, we all agreed there is now one title that feels completely appropriate.

And so: "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" it is.

As Professor Tolkien intended, “There and Back Again” encompasses Bilbo’s entire adventure, so don’t be surprised if you see it used on a future box-set of all three movies.

Before then however, we have a film to finish, and much to share with you. It’s been a nice quiet time for us—Jabez and I happily editing away in a dark cave in Wellington—but those halcyon days are quickly coming to an end. It will soon be time to step into the light. Expect to see and hear much about The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in the coming months.

And there’s also The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Cut, which we’re in the process of finishing, with over 25 mins of new scenes, all scored with original music composed by Howard Shore.

It’ll be a fun year!

Seems kinda wordy, but I like it fine.  There and Back Again, to me, sounds more like a Hobbit title, but whatever.  I understand why they changed it.  I think it's sounds cool though.

No, no. NO.  They should have kept it There and Back Again.  Color me annoyed.

 sounds great to me!

'There and Back Again' is the name of the memoir he wrote about the adventure, so maybe they decided to keep that seperate...

I don't mind the new title, but I'm kind of with LadyBrowncoat on this one.  I'm sure the battle will be the biggest and most exciting thing in the movie, but the story isn't about the battle.  The story is about the journey, making friends, losing friends, surviving to tell the tale.  They should have stuck with the original title, IMO.

yup stuck with the original title...but whatever..i haven't even seen desolation of smaug yet....would Smaug be a good name for a dog?

SarcasticCaveman 4/26/2014 7:56:16 PM

Only if the dog is very small, making the name ironic, VindicatedMalgus. ;)  Desolation of Smaug was alright, but without going into specific spoilers, it was a LOT more obvious that they're REALLY trying to stretch the story into a trilogy.  I gave it a B.

Why not "The Hobbit: Death of a Franchise"?

SarcasticCaveman 4/27/2014 4:41:45 AM

Because "Death of a Franchise" is too cynical for a movie where Laketown fights a dragon and 5 armies fight over the wealth under the mountain...duh.

They are probably keeping There and Back Again for the 4th movie of the series.
