The genre fans over at Benderspink have scooped up the theatrical options for another comic series. THR reports the company founded by Chris Bender and JC Spink---with an eye towards adapting numerous comics to film---has acquired the rights to The New West. The 2005 mini-series created by Jimmy Palmiotti and Phil Noto was published by Gareb Shamus' Black Bull Entertainment. The trade reports that Shamus will likely be on board as a producer but doesn't mention whether writer Palmiotti will help adapt his own series to screenplay form.
Plot Concept: Our story begins with a disgraced former Los Angeles Police detective Daniel Wise, who endures a near future deserted hostile LA environment where the Mayor has now been kidnapped and Daniel Wise is the only one who can save him, but can he do it with just a horse and sword?

Doesn't it seem like film options for comics get snapped up as soon as the ink is dry no matter what the title? I have a comic on a napkin I created after lunch yesterday about some heroic crumbs caught in a hopless war against an apocalyptic mustard stain. In this climate, I know I can sell a film option easily but, like New West, there's little chance of shooting a frame of film on it.
