Maybe when the movie comes out there will be a lot of surprises. They probably will have the more familiar first class but they wanted to introduce the new ones in the trailer.

Gauleyboy420, its not any sort of universe. And saying that its not 616 is just a copout. Its like saying it was okay for them to make Catwoman with Halle Berry, because it wasn't Earth Prime.

Like Wiseguy, I will see this, if only to be educated on how much of an EPIC FAIL this will be. Saying that I will go in as unbiased as I possibly can. In my head, I'll just keep repeating to myself that this is not an X-men movie. Its Mutants: First Class. Its not the title that is the actual problem. Its the idea that this is the X-Men.

I have a buddy who's a HUGE X-Men fan, even named his son Logan after Wolverine. I'm only peripherally aware of them, a part of the Marvel Universe I was never really into, so I have no true fan boy attachment to this franchise (Unlike Spider-Man, Thor, Captain America and Green Lantern), so I don't mind what I'm seeing. It clearly isn't all going to fit into the first trilogy's framework entirely but it won't bother me. It looks good from a non fanboy perspective.

No, my buddy would rather poke his own eyes out with a spork than watch this.

Gauley- I know ur the most optimistic person on Mania, but im PRETTY sure Bryan singer and them have NO clue what 616 is or what the ultimate universe is, or whatever other universe you're referring to. These movies are just Fox's own universe they decided to create after reading like 2 Xmen Comic books...and that's it.

This is pretty much what went down at Fox studios between a couple of hack writers:

“Ok, so what’s happening with that Magneto origin movie like Wolverine. That was awesome!”
“I like it but I think we should use the Xavier-Magneto story mentioned in the first X-men”
“yes, good idea, but we need more mutants. Our audience will be bored of just Magneto and Xavier and their falling out. How about when Xavier started his class?”
“agree, I like it. According to Wikipedia the first class was Angel, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Iceman and Beast. We’ve already used all of them, so let’s find other mutants”
“good point, I’m flipping through an X-men universe book here. This guy looks cool. Havok. It says he is Cyclops’ brother. We could change that right? If Juggernaut can be a mutant, if Batgirl can be Alfred’s niece if Spiderman can shoot goo out of his wrists then no one will care right?”
“What about this guy? Darwin. I love his name. Let’s use him.”
“Here is another. Banshee. It says he is from Ireland. Can we find a good Irish actor?”
‘Fassbender and McAvoy are already in this movie. That’s enough characters with accents.”
“We’re running out of mutants here. Well, my son got this comic in the dollar bin the other day. This red guy with horns is Nightcrawler’s dad.”
“Really? This movie is set in the past. That’s perfect! We could use him. Any other mutants that have parents with powers? This Chuck Austen knows how to write good stuff here”

Also, to continue to bash this, I read in a interview with Matthew Vaughn when he was given the job to direct that he wanted to follow the model of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot, paying homage to the original source material, while taking it in a new direction with a fresh, young cast.

So what happened? JJ Abrams Trek did just that. Fresh young cast to reboot the franchise without giving the middle finger to Trek fans on all of the film/TV continuity they followed for 30-40 years.

But I'm not sure Matthew Vaughn will pull it off as well as JJ Abrams did.  I think this will be an entertaining movie, just leave any knowledge of X-Men history at the door.

I don't think it's a copout. I think it is what it is. We may get a 616 movie someday, but for now I like the X-movies. (1&2) and 3 is ok for an action movie.

This looks great to me. AND I'm down with originality. To me the settings and ages are different but the characters remained true to thier comic counterparts in the first 2 movies. I know ALL of yoiu disagree with me. Don't care, not trying to convince you, it would be an exercise in futility. But As a pretty hardcore comic fan, I am still able to enjoy these flicks.

It doesn't have to be an exact copy of the comics. Change can be good, and these movies don't affect any of the characters we love in the books. You want the same story we've read for 30 years, go to the comic shop, you'll find it. Me I want something new. If a movie is bad because of pacing, editing, boring story, thats one thing. But I won't crap all over a movie because it didn't follow my exact image of what it should be.

Also Elbaz, I LOVED the new Trek and agree with you, BUT I think I read more hate from hardcore Trek fans about Abrams Trek, than love. According to hardcore Trek fans (not me) Abrams did give them the finger.

xmen1- story was slow, action and special effects were boring. Overeall avereage, gave it a C grade.

xmen2- didnt expect much after the first movie but was pleasantly surprised after a better script and better action. So B ( would have a gave it an A if woverine didnt keep getting his ass kicked)

xmen3- garbage! gabage! garbage! F- nuff sed!

first class- seeming it following the same formula as xmen 3, gonna produce the same garbage!
