News that Jackson still directing "Hobbit" false

I reported a while back that New Line told Peter Jackson they would not be asking for his directorial service for The Hobbit.  Soon after, it was learned that New Line only has the rights to the films for another year before they revert back to Saul Zaentz.

A new rumor quickly sprung up, originating from an interview Zaentz had with a German magazine, and has been making it's way around the internet.  The rumor uses a quote he gave which says that Peter Jackson would in fact be directing the upcoming film.

That rumor, sadly, is false.

Zaentz was quoted saying that Jackson would direct the film, but as the World of KJ reported, the interview was done weeks ago and BEFORE New Line showed Jackson the door.

A more recent quote from Zaentz has him saying, “We would like to see it done, of course with Peter Jackson.  He’s a good film director. He’s the right guy. He knows it too. But it’s a hard thing to do, when you feel you didn’t get the money you were supposed to get.”

The above quote is from AFTER the fallout, but Zaentz made it clear that he has no real say in the matter and that his previous quote was pre-fallout.

As for MGM, who happen to own the distribution rights to The Hobbit, they have the following to say, "We expect to partner with New Line in financing ‘The Hobbit.’  We support Peter Jackson as a filmmaker, and believe that when the dust settles, he’ll be making the movie. We can’t imagine any other result."

As of now, we just don't know what is going to happen.

I am telling you, It s just about business, After the great success of the lord of the ring, the studio give or buy jackson with 20 millions for direct the next movie, without know what it is. It was king kong. 200 millions budget, box office under expectation, his out ! that s it ! Now sam raimi blow the recette with spidey, he get the red carpet...that s the way it is ! nothing about art or vision, it s a cash machine, and the studio is running by business men.....Shame !

It will be a shame if Jackson doesn't get to make The Hobbit. I just hope the director, whomever it is, doesn't feel too intimidated following in Jackson's rather large middle-earth shoes. I worry that a new director would find the need to make a movie that is a large departure from the look and feel of Jackson's monumental trilogy.

werent they talking about sam raimi to do it at one time? i think sam raimi can pull it off if peter jackson doesnt do it.

Doesn't anyone watch Entourage but me? So you have a hit movie on your hands, or in this case an incredibly successful Trillogy under your belt. Jackson's asking price should in theory go up since he did what he was hired to do. He took a series of books that at one point were called "unfilmable", creating one of the biggest insta-classics of all time and made New Line studios a ton of cash. Now comes the next LOTR flicks, so the studios suits know his asking price will go up. To show they aren't going to be held at gunpoint the studio let's PJ know that he is not the only game in town by throwing Raimi's name out there. Think of it kind of as the same situation with Tim Burtons first Batman Flick. He wanted Nicholson for the joker. Nicholson didn't want to do it. Then Once other big names were mentioned, Jack was ready to play the joker. It's all office politics and office poker. One of them (Peter Jackson or New Line) is bluffing. Hollywood is ALL about manipulation. Subtle or not.

Ok, arses...It's obvious you don't know 1) about PJ's lawsuit vs NL, 2) anything about the movie ($) business itself.

First, PJ is or has sued NL due to misaccounted for $ regarding the LOTR movies. Like Jim Cameron before him, PJ was so confident in the films he agreed to take very little in compensation prior to the films being released and/or making money. In return, it is estimated that PJ made over 100M on the trilogy, not to mention other "kickbacks" that New Zealand probably hooked him up with for bringing all that cash to the Kiwi economy.

Gutsmgee, you quote the Warner Bros Batman movie with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson, did you know that film did not make a profit from the box office? It only made a profit from subsequent broadcast release and video. Jack Nicholson made over 55M for that movie.

Yet another example of money ruining a movie is Mission: Impossible, since Cruise is both a producer as well as lead actor he makes more than twice as much as he normally would. That is the reason that Paramount fired him, they weren't making the money, TC was.

Lastly, I love how people say that all of these movies made like 1B at the b.o., people that is GROSS, and does not take into effect the production costs, MARKETING, theater cuts (which in big movies is minimal, but for smaller films is larger), and such.

Don't get me wrong, none of these movie studios should be crying poor, when if a movie does not hold up to expectations they have no one to blame but themselves.

Lastly, SONY SUCKS!

To put it simply, it is in New Line's financial best interest to have PJ direct this. I predict that they will quickly settle this lawsuit so that he can. Here's to hoping.

jetpackjesus • Nov 29, 2006, 12:02pm •
Wait, so the movie that grossed $411 million (worldwide) with a production budget of $35 million didn't make any money at the box office? Regardless of marketing costs (and theaters are making most of their money of concessions), there is no way they spent more than $411 million dollars simply getting this movie out to theaters. You are right about the lawsuit though, thescourge. That's why Jackson isn't involved with this movie. Until it's settled, New Line and PJ will not be working together. Hopefully all will be settled soon and they will be back on working terms.

Slamshut that was kind of harsh...yet I sit here laughing! Jackson is the man for this movie, but each time this goes back and forth I lose interest a little more. Either they need to make a decision or I need to stop reading, lol. exfan, not sure what language that is, but in your honor I am going to speak it all day!
