A lot of rumors about which composer would finally get assigned to score the new Harry Potter film were floating around during the last days (imdb.com had been attributing it to Dario Marianelli (V FOR VENDETTA, THE BROTHERS GRIMM, but this has not been substantiated). David Yates, the director of the film, finally decided towards his friend and collaborator, British composer: Nicholas Hooper, the Harry Potter website, hpana.com has reported, citing a "reliable and authoritative source" (www.scoremagacine.com has also posted this news).

While not a well known composer worldwide, Hooper is well experienced, having written and produced music for over 250 films, series, and documentaries since 1988, and developing a reputation for his symphonic and colorful music.

In 2004 he won the BAFTA for Best Original Score for THE YOUNG VISITORS, being also nominated for STATE OF PLAY. Prior to this he was also BAFTA nominated for THE WAY WE LIVE NOW. In 1998 he won the coveted Golden Panda Award for LAND OF THE TIGER, a major BBC documentary series on India. The following year he won again (having been nominated for three separate scores), making him the first composer to win the award consecutively.

HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, starring Daniel Radcliffe Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Ralph Fiennes, Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman and Jason Isaacs is currently being filmed and it will be released on July 13th, 2007. The actual score won't be composed until well into 2007, most likely, so as we have seen frequently this assignment may yet change anytime between now and next June ...
