According to Variety, Nicolas Cage and Todd Garner have signed on to produce the upcoming live-action film, The Sorcerer's Apprentice.  The film is a potential starring vehicle for Cage.

The script, written by Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal (Eragon), follows an old sorcerer who leaves his workshop in the hands of an apprentice not yet fully trained in magic. The apprentice gets a broomstick to do his chores for him, but things get out of control when the broom takes over.

The story formed the basis for the animated classic Fantasia.

KJ's Take:  I'm interested, but a little scared.  Cage has been pretty hit or miss lately ... actually ... mostly miss.  The concept is there, and it could be a fun story to see transitioned into a live action film, but at the same time it lends itself to disaster if not done right.  The fact that Rosenthal is writing the script makes me nervous.

While I really want to look forward to this, I am getting an awful feeling about it.  I just don't like the names attached to it at this point.

Nic Cage is on Fire! With Grindhouse and Ghost Rider coming out soon, he's gonna explode!

National Treasure was also a fun recent Cage movie.

On the other side of the equation, there's The Wicker Man, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite "so-bad-it's-good" movies.

So Cage will be playing a role made famous by Mickey Mouse. I suppose there's been more peculiar sources for movies. After all, when somebody first pitched movies based on Disney's theme park rides, could anybody have imagined the Pirates series would bring in more money than what's in Scrooge McDuck's vault?

If this is hit, will Warner Brothers follow by filiming big-budget versions of classic Looney Tunes shorts? I wonder who'll they'll get to play the roles of Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd in the live action version of "What's Opera, Doc?" Maybe Giamatti would make a good Elmer Fudd...

Those terrifying live action broomsticks! Will they flood the workshop before Mickey can open a door and let the water out?!!! I just can't see this one working in live action long form.

I want to say something, The fantasia scene sequence was a support for the music. paul Dukas write that music and they imagine a scene with The Sorcerer's Apprentice to make all apect of the music beautiful. The mi\usic was the hero, not Mickey....I beleive to redo a movie only based on the mickey character will be very poor.

craigt - please tell me you are being sarcastic. The only one of the movies you list that was even remotely good was adaptation, and that was mostly because Robert McKee did a cameo. This is potentially the worst idea I have ever heard come out of Hollywood. I read the sorcerer's apprentice to my three year old every once in a while, but the concept doesn't even fly with her. "Why doesn't he open the door and let the water out daddy?" So why would we for one second believe this in live action, especially if NC is going to play the Mickey part. I would rather see him as the old wizard. I did think he did some pretty good voice work in Ant Bully, maybe they could do a cgi with him doing voice, although why do that when the original was animated anyways. Please dear god somebody pinch me I want to wake up.

Okay, McKee didn't make a cameo in Adaptation, it was Brian Cox playing McKee. Second of all Charlie Kaufman's script is what made adaptation not only good but brilliant. It had nothing to do with Cage although he was competent. Cage can't try to fool us any longer with trying to play younger characters. He should play the older scorcerrer. Wickerman was horrible. Especially compared to the original. He only makes an appearance in Grindhouse. Most of the films he has done in the past 6 years are pretty forgettable. The best being Adaptation and Matchstick Men. I want to laugh at him everytime I see him and the ridiculous hairpiece on Ghostrider.
