In the world of beautiful anime girls, comes the immortal masterpiece "Night Shift Nurses: Karte 5.5" In the continuance of this legendary series, director Okesawa himself has personally chosen these gems of outlandish scenes. Witness all the Doctor's evil & good deeds as you experience the most intense experiments and wicked madness from the hands of the insane Doctor! A fury of flourishing sexual activity segues into a harem of hot nubile nurses that are about to surrender into a world of pleasure and pain!

The Review!
Eggs and marbles and poop, oh my!

Audio:
The bilingual presentation for this series is fairly standard with a pair of stereo tracks encoded at 192 kbps. The English track seems to feel more alive and full but this is likely attributed to the differences in how the English track handles the voice acting. Their performances are much more outgoing which results in a louder sounding mix. Both of them are decent across the board though otherwise as dialogue is clean and clear throughout and we had no problems with dropouts or distortions during regular playback.

Video:
Originally released in 2003, the transfer for this OVA is presented in its original full frame aspect ratio. With only one episode here and twenty minutes of bonus materials, there is plenty of space for a solid look transfer and this release hits it on just about every note. The bitrate meter tends to stay heavily in the five and six mbps range with only a few dips below that during the main program. The shows animation quality shines through nicely as colors are solid without being oversaturated or having much in the way of noise. Cross coloration is absent as is aliasing during most of the panning sequences. Backgrounds maintain a very solid feel to them even with the style and tones used. The visual presentation overall is quite good with a very clean looking release that's generally problem free.

Packaging:
Fitting in with their Night Shift Nurses: Experiment and Night Shift Nurses: Kranke releases, Night Shift Nirses: Karte uses the same foil style with its front cover to give the logo a bit of extra notice, not that it really needs it when you consider that there are six women all servicing one guy and all we see are a whole lot of cute tushes. The character designs look great, outside of the good doctor, and this is the epitome of what a harem show is really all about. The explicit back cover is solid as well as it uses an all black background to let the character artwork stand out strongly. The various scenes from the show are used throughout, either by character artwork itself or a shot form the show, and it pushes the basic sexual level pretty nicely with only a hint of how twisted it really is. The summary gives you an idea of what to expect without outright calling it a clip show and the discs features and basic technical specs are clearly listed, though there isn't any sort of proper technical grid. The reverse side cover for the front isn't any less explicit since it's just showing butts while the reverse side back cover uses non nude shots from the show with a little bit of bondage thrown in to tease.

Menu:
The menu layout is pretty nice as it takes the character artwork from the front cover and puts it on the right side with some real vibrancy to it. The left side has a patient's chart which has the navigation strip going down it, all of which is set to some basic lights playing in the background and some instrumental music that runs the standard thirty second loop. Access times are nice and fast and navigation is straightforward and problem free. ASM releases go the extra mile for the adult anime fan who doesn't want any plot by offering the direct to sex access from the top level as well. The disc did read our players' language presets for the audio but did not for the subtitles, leaving us without any during initial playback.

Extras:
The only extra included is a photo gallery with stills from the show. I don't know anyone who considers the bonus videos an extra.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)
Just when I thought I could get away from those damn eggs, they throw them back in my face. Which just makes me squirm. Night Shift Nirses has been around in the US since 2002 but those feelings are still very much present even after all these years. They have lessened a bit as exposure to some other shows, such as Dark Love has shown me worse, but also because the sequel/spinoffs to Night Shift Nirses have been fairly enjoyable and somewhat tamer. With Night Shift Nirses: Karte, we're basically treated to a clip show of the first half of the series and reminded exactly why the series was both so reviled and celebrated at the same time among adult anime fans.

Night Shift Nirses: Karte takes us through the first five episodes or so through this thirty minute clip show that weaves the primary series of girls with Ren, Hikaru and Fujisawa. Under the influence, pressure and guidance of Dr. Hirasaka, they're taught that they actually love performing in his humiliating experiments and want to be a constant part of them. The draw of the show was two-fold. The first is that the girls are all taken forcefully at first but then discover that they love the humiliation that he heaps on them and that keeps them coming back for more. Their denials never resonate as true and each new thing that they do to them simply makes them want him more, which in turn has him coming up with more lavish experiments.

The second part of the shows appeal is a bit more controversial and dependent on particular tastes. And that's the wide variation in the sex scenes themselves. The forceful nature of what Hirasaka does to them can turn off plenty of viewers just with that, but he tends to get rather "clinical" with them at times by using all the implements available to him in the hospital. That adds a bit more of an "ew" factor at times but they balance it out often by introducing a fair amount of bondage which drags other people back to watch. Night Shift Nirses: Karte does take it up a few notches though with the sex scenes that has helped it stand the test of time for its, well, ickiness for many. That comes in the form of the scatological content, the enemas and god help me, the eggs and the marbles. If it can be put inside these girls, Hirasaka will do it.

When we first saw Night Shift Nirses, it left quite the impression because it was unlike other shows released in North America at the time. Since then we've had other shows play up the scatological area, pushing the enemas and so forth. But Night Shift Nirses: Karte stands the test of time because it was the one that went the furthest the quickest. It also earned its reputation because it was talked about at conventions where company reps were squeamish about their own product. But it also left a wonderful impression because it's the kind of show you want to expose others to. During one of the first hentai dubbing panels I attended, I went with a few female friends who hadn't seen any of the show before. The scene they chose is on this volume where Fujisawa has her butt up in the air and sprays out a series of beautiful marbles along with a whole lot of poop. The scene has that kind of twisted beauty to it that you can't help but admire. But it was my friends reactions that made it worthwhile because they had that look that they'd seen something they never even thought possible before. And that's what Night Shift Nirses: Karte is all about, in condensed form.

In Summary:
As much as I detest much of what goes on in these scenes, there is a certain beauty to it with the character designs and the fluidity of the animation. It's all done to such a wonderful level, especially in these early episodes, that it just stands out as a great piece of work. At the same time I can't help but imagine the people working on this back then laughing themselves silly over what they were working on. The level of poop and urine flying around and the artistry that went into it is almost comical, particularly when you imagine artists trying to outdo each other on how stunning their particular scene is being done. That said, a release like this is difficult simply because the "sexual narrative" is so disjointed that it's not something you can really get into. What Night Shift Nirses: Karte does is provide a good jump in point to checking out the franchise in general or juts having something to disgust and disturb your friends with. It's more for the completists or those that walk into an adult store and see something appealing and grabs it on a whim. Which they will do, repeatedly.
