Somehow Raizo survived the battles in the Yagyu clan from the last volume. Unfortunately, his mothers Ihai monument did not. The Ihai was broken and it seems his mother’s spirit has departed. This may have broken Raizo’s heart, but it freaks out the Ninja Girls as they fear Mother’s spirit may become a vengeful spirit and haunt them forever. The task of finding a princess for Raizo to marry is quickly disregarded while they try to put Mother’s spirit back into the Ihai, or to rest.

Soon a girl arrives that cooks and cleans for Raizo and the other girls. This is usually Raizo’s job, so it is a welcome change for him. Azami claims her family was affiliated with Raizo’s clan and her family hates Seigan. Being attractive, mild-mannered, and good at cooking makes her an instant rival for Kagari. Not too mention all this seems a little suspicious.

Hell hath no fury like a woman’s scorn. Unfortunately, Kagari’s scorn for Azami turns Raizo against Kagari. Not only does this break Kagari’s heart, but it also costs her the use of her Shintaigo technique. Shintaigo only works for Kagari when the man she loves watches her and loves her back.

This sets the group up for disaster when Kagari runs away, and Azami turns out to be Seigan’s lackey. Will Azami lead Raizo to his death? Will Kagari’s broken heart lead her to join Seigan? What the heck are Kisarabi and Himemaru doing while all this is going down?

In Summary:

The search for a princess takes a back seat in this volume. Instead a beautiful girl that claims to be the daughter of a former vassal of Raizo’s clan appears to help Raizo. She is just as cute as Raizo’s kunoichis, but this girl can also cook and clean. The path to Raizo’s heart may just lead through his belly.

This break from princess searching is a nice change of pace, and it keeps the main antagonist in view. Seigan is a sly fox, and if he can’t kill Raizo openly, then he will use underhanded tricks to get what he wants. This creates good conflict within Raizo’s group and keeps the story entertaining. Plus the artwork is good and there is plenty of fanservice for readers who enjoy that. Sprinkle in some comedy and this continues to be a fun series.
