In light of strong consumer demand for their new handheld gaming unit, Nintendo announced today that it will increase total shipments of Nintendo DS to North America by 40 percent, to 1.4 million systems before the end of the year. After supplying retail outlets with their initial batch of 500,000 DS units on November 21, stores started reporting that their supply of the handheld was reaching low levels, or in some cases, a complete sell through. At the present time 700,000 DS units have been sold in North America, and an additional 500,000 have been purchased in Japan.
"Nintendo is doing everything it can to make Nintendo DS attainable for the holidays," said George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications, in a company issued press release. "The enthusiastic response from shoppers has made Nintendo DS 'must-have' -- and we're determined to make it 'will have.'"
