What They Say
The son of a famous pianist, music student Shinichi Chiaki dreams of studying abroad and becoming a great conductor. But so far his fears have kept him grounded: he's afraid of flying! As he watches other classmates achieve what he's always wanted, Shinichi wonders if she should quit music altogether. Now that he's graduated, what does the future hold? Then a chance encounter leads the music in a whole new direction... in Japan!

Meanwhile, Nodame meets Shinichi's family for the first time, and no one escapes unscathed! Maybe that's why the friendship between Nodame and Shinichi is threatened, a development that could mean the end of Nodame Cantabile!

The Review
In this most recent volume of Nodame Cantabile the focus remains on the manga's heart-throb Chiaki. Readers familiar with this title should have already noticed something special about Chiaki. There is a talent that has been dormant inside of him. And with the help of Megumi and those he has befriended at school that has come out. This is the story of a person coming of age as his heart learns to open up to those around him.

But now Chiaki's world is beginning to recognize him. In his case, fame is knocking on his door. But as the young man begins to look at the world around him, he had no clue it was coming. The rest of the musical world was waiting for him, but he was busy at school going through his finals until a pair of writers from a major magazine told him. Not only that, the rest of the world is busy planning his future. Everyone from his friends to his family to even people he does not know wants to choose for him. They all think they know better than he does. But isn't that how he feels about Nodame? And maybe they are all doing this because he cares.

For the first four volumes or so of this series, Nodame was a wonderful comedy utiliizing excellent musical elements to make this a title that is not only unique and very fresh. The level of creativity was always high, as Ninimiya's humor is over the top. And at the same time, the slice of life drama was very easy to associate with. Well, this volume changed all of that. This is a pure josei romance drama. The romance is so subtle. Its been coming for a while now. Now that it is here, it is apparent everywhere (despite its subtlty). From the music Ninomiya selected to the changes in how the two leads think about and address each other, and the feelings are mutual. And the timing is perfect when you consider how much the cast has grown over the last year and a half. School can do that to you if you give it a chance. Now Ninomiya and Chiaki have to show us where her talents are going from here. I cannot wait for their next season!

So hurry up while before Nodame ruins the mood like only she can! And don't miss out on seeing NodaMe in negligee!! Now that's sophisticated!
