Anime projects continue to ramp up to differing degrees in Hollywood and now the Hollywood Reporter has a new item out that indicates that premium cable outlet Starz is putting some development action into a live action version of Noir. The Noir series, released as what became the first of three "girls with guns" series from Bee Train (followed up by Madlax and El Cazador), ran for twenty-six episodes back in 2001 and was one of the more popular releases from ADV Films in the US at the time for its combination of visual design, girls with guns and the music. While Bee Train was not able to replicate that magic with the two follow-up series, they earned themselves quite the reputation with it. Noir was recently acquired by US distributor FUNimation, and this new will definitely give them a bit more notice for a license rescue.
Starz has attempted to build up its stable of shows, following the lead of other premium outlets and cable channels such as AMC which has done well with Mad Men and now Walking Dead. This project has quite the pedigree behind it as well as it's being produced by the men behind the Spartacus: Blood and Sand TV series. That show started off rough with fans but has gained an intense following as they've really let it go where it needs to. Sam Raimi and Bob Tapert are also very familiar names to genre TV fans as they were responsible for both Xena: Warrior Princes and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. And before that they were the ones who helped get the Evil Dead series of films out there, something that has definitely earned them a reputation over the years. Their involvement in the project, along with Starz commitment to getting themselves more mindshare in the original programming department, gives this series a lot of pull. Another noted person behind the new production is Stephen Lightfoot who is serving as a writer and exec producer, who has credits such as Criminal Justice behind him.
Plot Summary: A mysterious email; a haunting melody. Professional assassin Mireille Bouquet's world is knocked askew by an unnerving contact from a young amnesiac, Yumura Kirika, whose killing skills are as deadly as Mireille's, and whose missing memory may unlock the mystery of Mireille's life as well. With their pasts inextricably linked, Mireille conditionally admits Yumura into her confidence. In uneasy partnership, the two-as NOIR-face a conspiracy that quickly calls on all of their lethal resources. It is a journey through the darkness, searching for a truth that they know will mean their deaths.
