Final thought on this - while I doubt it will be straight up comedy, let's be honest with ourselves...this movie will feature a heavily armed raccoon, a walking tree who is royalty, and a green guy with an IQ barely in the double digits who can't blame it on rage, and it's from the director of "Slither"...I think John C. Reilly will fit right in.

Yes I think we can definitely expect some humor. Gunn's Slither and Super show he has a very twisted sense of humor which  toned down for a pg13 rating I think will be great.

I hate to keep going back to it but it can definitely be Marvel's Star Wars aged appropriately for this time and era

Hard to concentrate looking at thezillaman's avatar

Anyhow. I'll wait and pass judgment until after the movie comes out. Just because Reilly has been typecast in over the top comedic roles doesn't mean he doesn't have the chops to pull of a more serious role. If Robin Williams was typecast for comedic roles after Mork & Mindy and Popeye we never would have known he was capable of performances like Good Morning Vietnam, Dead Poet's Society, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Good Will Hunting, roles which earned him 2 Golden Globes and an Oscar

I still contend that this is going to be a massive sleeper hit. Maybe not Avengers huge, but very close. I think Marvel/Disney are doing this for the moms and dads. It is still hard core enough for comic fans yet is appeals to the Pixar and Kung Fu Panda crowd too. I mean Rocket Raccoon? That alone will get kids in seats. Tie this in with the Avengers and they will make billions.

am i missing something, you guys keep saying reilly as a superhero, but isnt he really an intergalactic cop

BunyonSnipe 6/16/2013 3:38:13 AM

He's a oscar nominated character actor!

BunyonSnipe 6/16/2013 3:43:47 AM

Lets not forget he cut his teeth on stage in proper drama, yes it's an odd choice, but who wants to see the same old faces time after time, you just KNOW the studio wanted someone more Tom Cruise shaped...

BunyonSnipe 6/16/2013 3:48:49 AM

the problem is with GoTG is the audience, NOT the film...

You HAVE to be willing to lose yourself in it or it WILL NOT WORK!

This is a cinematic version of the Marvel Universe and we all know how fecking crazy that place can be...

I want to see a Death's Head cameo, leading onto his own spin off TV series!

So far this leading to a flop, I hope they are not investing too much in this tax write movie..

I felt the same way when I heard that RDj was cast as Tony Stark and the movie would be directed by Jon Favreau. So I went in with low expectations and was fully prepared for it to suck. Marvel was just starting out at the time and taking a huge risk with a director with a spotty record and a star whose career was basically over. The point being that it show's a willingness to think outside the box and take risks. So I look at GotG as just another instance of Marvel taking a risk and thinking outside the box. And if it does flop (but I don't it will) so what? Given they're other successes they're due for a miss step. It doesn't damage the brand. You learn from those mistakes and move on.
