The Giver arrives 8-15-14
Amidst all the superhero and action films of the summer, The Giver might get over looked. This small Sci-Fi story is worth the look. Having read the original novel by Lois Lowry,  I will be keeping an eye on it for you Maniacs. Check out the trailer here on

The Plot: December is the time of the annual Ceremony at which each twelve-year-old receives a life assignment determined by the Elders. Jonas watches his friend Fiona named Caretaker of the Old and his cheerful pal Asher labeled the Assistant Director of Recreation. But Jonas has been chosen for something special. When his selection leads him to an unnamed man-the man called only the Giver-he begins to sense the dark secrets that underlie the fragile perfection of his world. Given his lifetime assignment at the Ceremony of Twelve, Jonas becomes the receiver of memories shared by only one other in his community and discovers the terrible truth about the society in which he lives.

The Giver features Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes, Alexander Skarsgård, and Taylor Swift.

The Giver arrives August 15th, 2014.

I'm very interested in seeing this.  I have not read the book but I know of it.  It is a young adult book.  Lately many young adult books (like the series of  Twilight, Percy Jackson, Divergent and Hunger Games Books) have been made into movies.  The movies however, are not marketed solely to a young adult audience. I think that is a good thing as many adults have reading skills that are at a lower level than young adults.  I'm not condescending.  In fact, I may fall into that category myself.  I know that when my daughters got into high school, I discovered that I was incapable of helping them with their advanced math (trig, calculus etc) homework.

This story broaches many delicate / serious subjects which may be why some schools chose to ban it.

I think that Meryl Streep is very adept at finding good/strong acting roles.  The fact that she chose to be part of this project increases my interest in it.
