NYCC: The X-Files Panel Wrap Up

Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz granted interviews to the press at the New York Comic Con last weekend. Truth be told, their panels and interviews at the New York Comic Con may have been the hardest part of all. Shrouded in mystery, their new film, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, has fans and internet chat rooms buzzing. Why? Because everything from the plot to the characters and any connections to the TV series mythology has been kept in secret. Knowing that they would reveal very little, Carter and Spotnitz did divulge a few bits of information about their long awaited sequel.

After several questions that lead to Carter and Spotnitz to reply, “I don’t know and deny everything” they discussed that the X-Files was not a dark show and in essence was a show about letting the light in and finding the truth. They described their creation as fun and scary and believed that they had to bring it back for the hardcore fans.

David Duchovny returns as Agent Fox Mulder in X-FILES:I WANT TO BELIEVE(2008).

The X-Files: I Want to Believe is a stand alone story that is free from mythology of the series and anyone could follow the film’s plot. Carter did reveal that the seeds for this story have been sewn throughout the series and hardcore fans will see that. Carter also mentioned that the X-Files Revelations DVD set would be a great refresher for the fans.

They did promise that this film is like nothing we have seen before. Their reasoning for keeping everything secret is to deliver a great ride and really scare us. Yet, at the heart of The X-Files: I Want to Believe there is message of hope.

Agents Mulder (Duchovny) and Scully (Anderson) back in freezing temps in THE X-FILES:I WANT TO BELIEVE(2008).

The X-Files: I Want to Believe Quick List:
The film is less than two hours long

There is no appearance by the Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis)

Frank Black (Lance Henriksen) from Millennium does not appear in the film
The time between the two films will be addressed

Spotnitz promises a “really cool” Blu-Ray DVD for the film

D.C. Comics will launch a new age of X-Files comics coinciding with the film

Carter would not reveal if the Lone Gunmen would appear in the film

The film will address Mulder and Scully’s personal issues as they pertain to the mythology of the series

Will there be another X-Files movie?   Spotnitz stated that he approached this film as if this would be the last time we will see Mulder and Scully. However, both agreed that The X-Files: I Want to Believe could make a great foundation for a series of films. One way or another, the truth is out there and it waits for us on July 25th.

I guess future X-files movies will depend on the success of this one (what a shock). I hope it does well; I’d like to see the “alien colonization” movie that Chris and Frank set-up at the end of the TV series.

As much as I am looking forward to Ironman, Hulk, Batman, Indiana Jones and Narnia THIS is the movie I am most anxious to see this summer. I can't wait till it finally hits theaters.

LOL bigsxc! I feel your pain. DC no less. Thank God Quesada can't wipe out Skully & Mulder's gettin' it on.

Didio is just a bad. I just hope they don't get retconned in Final (Really) Crisis.

Touché! I guess I just prefer that at least SOME time is put into making up a mechanism for it. How many things at Marvel have been rationalized as essentially someone making a wish? But make no mistake my friend, this is the Final Crisis! And we won’t get any older, and we won’t ever die. Oh! And the Big Dig solved all of Boston’s traffic issues!

I'm definitely gonna be there in line to see this movie... I wish the title wasn't so hokey, but whatever. I WANT to believe this film is gonna kick ass. I WANT to believe that it'll be successful enough to launch a new series of films. I WANT to believe that Xibit isn't going to screw this movie up.

On a related note, I still wish they'd gone about the end of the series differently. I thought Dogget and Reyes on their own gave us a good change of pace from Mulder and Scully and that they'd be great for an "X-Files: The Next Generation" type of series... seemless from the first series, but with the slightly different flavor that the new agents gave us.
