It's a question that's been on the minds of fans for well over a year now: Who will play Steve Rogers in Marvel's upcoming feature film 'First Avenger: Captain America'.

The internet has been bubbling up casting rumors for a few weeks now but The Heat Vision blog offers up the first solid list of actual contenders for the part. And are you ready for the top gun?

According to Heat Vision, John Krasinski of 'The Office' fame is one of the leading contenders for the part. Krasinski is currently seen as a comedy/romance player, largely due to his run on the hit NBC comedy and recent films, but he's definitely got the height and athleticism for the part. C2F isn't completely sold on the idea, but with some training he could bulk up into the living embodiment of liberty!

Reportedly director Joe Johnston has been testing numerous actors and Krasinski is one of seven top contenders.

Garret Hedlund ('Tron Legacy') was also said to be a front-runner but apparently the studio recently eliminated him from consideration.

Others who have recently tested include Michael Cassidy ('Smallville'), Patrick Fluger ('The 4400'), Scott Porter ('Friday Night Lights') and Mike Vogel ("Cloverfield"). Marvel also likes Chace Crawford ('The Covenant')  who has yet to test.

As a final disclaimer, Heat Vision adds that these seven may all wash out for various reasons and the search could continue. But for now, these are The Captain's top recruits.

What do you think, Maniacs? Any of these names clicking with you? Who should be Marvel's CAPTAIN AMERICA? Post your comments below...

Krasinski's cool but no Cap. Chace Crawford has the right look and build, but I think we're looking for someone who can act here. I mean, if this actor's eventually gonna be on-screen with Robert Downey Jr. and Edward Norton in an Avengers movie, he's gonna have to have the chops for it. No opinion on the other guys.

I really dont think that list is all that bad. Jon Krasinski wouldnt be that bad at all to have as CAP. In fact the only one i would rally aginst getting the part would be Patrick Fluger..My favs Besides Jon K would be Scott Porter (there s apic on IMDB that sold me) and Mike Vogel ( again an IMDB pic sold me, however his acting abaility...meh). Chance Crawford doesnt seem to be that bad at all either..but i never seen the covenant (neither did most of the world) so i dunno about his acting ability.

Still the guy from Human Target is my number choice even though hes older.

Krasinski is a funny dude and a very good actor, but there is no way in hell he should be allowed to wield the shield. Face it , you need someone who , 1) looks All-American , 2) has a pretty damn good athletic build,  and 3) has an aura of Charisma. This guy has to lead the Avengers. Not to mention soldiers to their deaths in WWII. Krasinski couldn't lead me to a hot dog stand.

Its funny, because when I watch Human Target, and how Mark Valley acts in situation, I see more and more Steve Rogers. He would be perfect if it wasn't for his age.

Krasinski is perfect for the role.

I could deal with Krasinski as Cap. He'd have to bulk up , but otherwise, how does he not look all american, and he's got the acting chops to pull it off. Like Peter Parker you have to capture the INNER Steve Rogers, a scared weak kid, who suddenly finds himself immersed in a world where he is not used to being. Hiding his scaredness with his heroic demeanor. I think Krasinski can do it.

The only other guy up there that "looks like" cap is the Scott Porter guy.

I  think Jim Halburt  would be good i think he's a great actor and would like to see him in a different role that he normally does. you never know whos good for certain roles unless they are given the chance

I'm not really familiar with any of these guys except for Fluger. Can't say that he'd be great, but not dead set against him. I'd vote against Chace Crawford, simply for the fact that he's on Gossip Girl.  I'm surprised neither of the Winchester boys is on this list.  I still say Jared Padalecki is the way to go. Wonder why the studio nixed Hedlund. I think he would have been alright.

Btw, what is their (Heat Vision's) source? I'd be curious if they have had a track record of scooping other sites on news like this.

Also (and I'm not slamming on you, gauley), it's a foregone conclusion that whoever plays Cap is going to have to bulk up. Let's not get into a run of 50 comments blasting every candidate because they're not built like Cap.

rgtchtiger 2/24/2010 12:31:23 PM

Hmm...Krasinski is certainly an outside-the-box concept as Cap.  One idea that had popped in my head recently was Josh Lucas.  He's a fairly well-known actor, but he's kinda been "that guy" instead of a superstar like Matt Damon, DiCaprio, McCaughnehey, or Bale.  Lucas certainly has (what I'd call) the All-American look to him, but I'll stick with the masses and give it a "wait and see" approach.

And finally, I agree with everyone else that Mark Valley would be great...  If not for the fact that he's 45 years old.  But he is.
