As promised, the official cast for Zach Snyder's WATCHMEN (based off the Alan Moore graphic novel) was released at Comic Con 2007. There is only one new revelation while the other five remaining characters/actors have been leaked beforehand. Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, Matthew Goode, Billy Crudup, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Malin Akerman have been cast in the the film "officially".

From The Hollywood Reporter:

Set in an alternate America, "Watchmen" follows costumed hero Rorschach, who is living a vigilante lifestyle because most masked heroes have retired or been outlawed. While investigating a murder, Rorschach learns that a former masked-hero colleague has been killed, prompting him to begin investigating a possible conspiracy.

Haley will play Walter Kovacs, aka Rorschach, who ignores the ban on costumed vigilantes.

Crudup will play Dr. Manhattan, a superpowered being with godlike powers and temperament.

Akerman will play Laurie Juspeczyk/the Silk Spectre, who is involved with Dr. Manhattan -- but that relationship begins to fall apart as he becomes more disconnected from humanity.

Goode will play Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias, a costume adventurer who retired voluntarily, disclosed his identity and built a large fortune. He hatches a plot to avert a global catastrophe he believes will be caused by Dr. Manhattan.

Wilson will play the Nite-Owl, a crime-figher who uses technical wizardry and has an owl-shaped flying vehicle.

Morgan will play the Comedian, a cigar-chomping, gun-toting vigilante-turned-paramilitary agent.

I don't know the other actors very well, or at all, but I love Jeffrey Dean Morgan (he was great on both Grey's and Supernatural). I must confess that I haven't read Watchmen, but from the character description, Morgan sounds like a perfect fit for the Comedian.

I like Morgan well enough on Supernatural but I can't say I'm too thrilled about the casting in this film, everyone is too young with the exception of Haley. He is perfectly casted.

This is a bit off subject but I'm sure they will post on here soon, they got Harold Perrineau (Michael) back for the next season of Lost!

I'm just not familiar with this comic at all, but sounds interesting.

Really? That`s cool. Since they are off the island, at least in the season finale, it would make more sense for him to have a role in the "real" world. Hopefully, he gets what he deserves after screwing everyone over.

As far as the casting for Watchmen, like the others I don`t really know mnay of these actors, but maybe that is a good thing. I can definitely see Morgan as the comedian.

I know I’ll probably get a lot of flak for this but I never thought a “Watchmen” movie was a good idea. The source material just isn’t adequate for the cinema media. It’s too complex and deep, with far too many subplots, character development, philosophical discussions, long dialogs and moral questioning to be squeezed into a 2-3 hours spectacle.

Sure there are a few moments that could translate into some great action sequences (most of them involving Rorschach’s investigation) and every time Dr. Manhattan shows up on the screen could be staggering if they put some money into it, but the truth is that this is not what the graphic novel is about. This is not like adapt a Frank Miller’s work (of whom I’m a huge fan, BTW) that, despite the great dialogs and character treatment, are at their heart pure action pieces.

So, in the end, one of two things could happen with this movie: it’s either going to be made as a summer blockbuster epic filled with masked heroes, graphic violence and tons of CGI effects, and miss the point of what made it such a great graphic novel,

Or they will try to keep it close to its roots and make a dense, challenging, controversial movie that the “serious people” will find too silly (with the costumes and sci-fi tone) and the “geeks” will find too slow paced.

The though of making this movie has been around for a while. I remember rumors tossed around years ago about Tommy Lee Jones as The Comedian and Dolph Landgren. as Dr. Manhattan. Back then, when the movie industry use to (at least try) take itself more seriously it could have worked. Today, with 2 eyes on the box office and none on the quality of the product, I’m not so sure.

I really hope I’m wrong.

Last night, I had a revelation that Michael C Hall would have been PERFECT as Rorschach after watching Dexter season one. But, alas, I am just going to wait and see how they handle it.

I'm glad to see they're making this movie, but like post #5 I'm a little worried that it won't translate well onto the big screen. Watchmen is a brilliant piece of modern literature, not just a comic book, and is so complex that I doubt a three hour movie will do it justice. Still, I'm excited that it's actually getting made! I think the casting might be a little too young too, but I'm not worrying about that too much.

I haven't read the novel (though I'm becoming interested in doing that) but I'm sure whoever adapts it for the screen will disappoint someone.
While a novel, graphic or otherwise can be an intellectual material filled with dense ideas that can be re-read and time taken to ponder over, film is primarily an emotional medium. You are meant to feel what the character's are going through and thick slices of information can easily bog it down.
I imagine alot of thought-provoking stuff will have to be let go in order for the movie to move at a steady pace.

Post #5: I whole heartedly agree with you about this being a rocky road. Truthfully, this flick will piss some one off, whether or not it's great. But come on, you think that a version where Dolph Lundgren plays Dr. Manhattan is considered Hollywood taking itself seriously?

The only problem I have with this cast (with the exception of Haley and Cruddup) is that they're all too young and in too good a shape. I hope a few of the roles are just the announcements for the characters in their younger days.

I'd kill to see Ian McShane as the Comedian, and Bill Pullman as Night Owl.

A fella can dream.

J.Haley - Great Choice.

M. Akerman - Don't really work for me. Character is too strong, personality wise, for her to pull off convincingly.

M. Goode - Needs to put on some muscle. This character is supposed to be damn near perfect mentally and physically.

P. Wilson - Not Pudgy enough to play him later in the film, no prosthetics please. To prep for the role, I suggest he drink a lot of beer. (Val Kilmer would be my choice)

J. Morgan - Good choice. I can't wait to see him with the hideous scar. (Tom Berenger would have been my choice.)

Like some of you, I think the cast is a tad young, in particular Nite-Owl and Comedian.
