Oldman joins Robocop

By Robert T. Trate     May 24, 2012
Source: Collider

Director Jose Padilha got off to a nice start with setting The Killing star Joel Kinnaman as the lead in the Robocop reboot, and now he’s landed a very fine actor to star alongside Kinnaman. Gary Oldman has signed on to star as Norton, the scientist who creates Robocop and “finds himself torn between the ideals of the machine trying to rediscover its humanity and the callous needs of a corporation.”  Oldman’s a terrific actor and I’m eager to see how big of a role this Norton character will be in Padilha’s iteration of the story.

No production start-date has yet been set, but with an August 9th, 2013 release date looming the film is apparently eying a shoot in Toronto.  Kinnaman recently talked about the film and said that he can’t imagine how it could be PG-13, so hopefully we’re in for an R-rated Robocop.  That would definitely be a rarity in a sea of PG-13 actioners, but its possible that Ridley Scott’s R-rated Prometheus could alter studio thinking if it does really well.

Thanks to Chopsaki for the submission.

Great casting choice!  I don't see why they need to reboot, they should just continue the storyline with new model.  All set in the future anyway.

I want this reboot, I'm glad it's being rebooted, the franchise needs it, the fans need it, the world needs it.

I loved the original but I like that it seems to be going in a new direction here. More personal, hopefully just as violent.

No need for Robocop to be remade

I love remake bashers.  Nothing like watching people gripe about nothing.

I love the original..but, as classic as it is, Robocop, is becoming dated. I think this remake could be great. Now, Buckaroo Banzai, is another story. That movie was a total mindfuck  when it came out..haha.

I'd buy that for a dollar!

And Detroit needs it!

Although they're filming it in Toronto. What up wit dat?

XeroWarp 5/24/2012 9:47:23 AM

@Monkey...And the bad part is, nothing in Toronto, looks like Detroit! Except maybe some sky shots even then, they'd have to CGI, in some smog. Didn't Detroit, recently commission a statue or something of Robocop ala, Rocky statue ?? They should at least film a little in Detroit.

I agree this needs a reboot, it's hard to watch the originals now with how bad the effects and action are. I can watch Star Wars over and over but watching this and Total Recall... it's hard due to the FX cheese.
