Which one…

When it comes down to it you have to ask yourself, “Which one do I buy?” Is it the DVD titled “Special Edition” or do I save a few bucks and just get the movie? How many times will I watch those special features?   Growing up in the eighties and nineties and loving movies like I do, the ‘Making of…’ a movie was a must watch. Whether it was on TV, Cable, or a special VHS tape the ‘Making of…’ was always a lot of fun. Today all movies are made with these ‘Making of’ featurettes and pre-packaged to drive up the cost of DVDs. Are they worth it? Are multiple commentary tracks and web episodes worth those extra hard earned dollars?   Do we loose sight of what is really important, the movie itself? Personally, the Special Edition of all three ‘Lord of the Rings’ was a must buy. The commentaries by cast and crew were a real treat and the documentaries were probably the best behind the scenes you could ever ask for. This week, three films are coming out with multiple editions; ‘Caligula’, ‘1408’ and ‘Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer’. These are three very different films, but ones that the studios are intent on squeezing a few more dollars out of.   For me, ‘Caligula’, R-Rated or Unrated, should come as one disc. Seeing the different versions would be interesting, much like the 1953 version on ‘Invaders from Mars’ (which had a British cut and an American cut on a single DVD). The differences were subtle, but when it came to the ending, wow what a difference. Will ‘Caligula’s’ different cuts be surprisingly different? Probably not, just more murder and sex I’m sure.   The ‘Power Cosmic Edition’ of the Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer’ looks great. I just wish they would have gone into as much depth and detail with the actual movie as they did with all their special features, or at least make it believable that Ioan Gruffudd and Jessica Alba have any kind of chemistry. Personally ‘1408 (Unrated)’, though not as heavy on the special features, is my pick of the week because it was a deliciously scary fun ride and when it comes down to it, the movie is what I will be watching over and over again.

“The rise and fall of the notorious Roman Emperor Caligula, showing the violent methods that he employs to gain the throne, and the subsequent insanity of his reign - he gives his horse political office and humiliates and executes anyone who even slightly displeases him. He also sleeps with his sister, organizes elaborate orgies and embarks on a fruitless invasion of England before meeting an appropriate end. There are various versions of the film, ranging from the heavily- truncated 90-minute version to the legendary 160-minute hardcore version which leaves nothing to the imagination (though the hardcore scenes were inserted later and do not involve the main cast members) (AMAZON)”.

It's the double-pack of 1408 for me. The stupid thing is that I'll get the R1 DVD before it even arrives in the cinemas down here, in Australia.

Wasn't the ultimate collector's edition of Blade Runner suppose to come out this week?

it's the only thing I though of getting this week. That fantastiCRAP movie was such a disapointment and a borefest, even the first one was better and even then that was a crapfest.

I know some people like it but, for me, this movie had so many plotwholes and weaknesses storywise, it was a disaster.

in my view of course...
