Arrow: The Huntress Returns Review

Deadshot Returns!

By Tim Janson     March 22, 2013

It was like reunion week on Arrow with the Huntress, Roy Harper, Laurel’s mother Dinah all making return appearances.  Dinah Lance returns with the shocking claim that she believes daughter Sarah, whom they assumed died when Queen Yacht sank, may still be alive.  There’s obvious, but unexplained tension between Dinah, Laurel, and Quentin as they discuss the seeming impossible development.

The Huntress, Helena Bertinelli, has returned Hellbent on killing her father, Frank before he can disappear into the FBI’s witness protection program.  Despite Oliver’s objections over her vendetta, he decides to help her in order to reduce the risk of any collateral damage.  But it turns out the police were ready for the attempt and set a trap, capturing Helena leading to Oliver having to bust her out of the police station.

Oliver has also opened up his new club and Thea, somewhat enjoyable for the first time in…ever, tries to help Roy Harper get a job there…after he saves her from a couple of thugs who try to mug her in the Glades.  In flashbacks to the island, Oliver and Slade Wilson steal a computer chip From Fyers’ missile system, and use it to bargain a way off the island.

Wow!  Was this episode packed or what?  Sometimes Arrow can get bogged down in a good deal of filler but this week was a different story.  There was so much to take in and digest.  I was somewhat lukewarm on the Huntress’s initial appearance but thought the character worked much better this time around.  She was much closer in tone to the fiercer comic book version.  What’s more it’s obvious that Oliver still has feelings for her which makes for an interesting dynamic considering his current girlfriend is a detective.

Roy Harper also began to ingrain himself into the fold with his rescue of Thea, combining fighting skills with some nifty parkour moves.  It will be interesting to see how the Sarah plot plays out.  If she is alive then why hasn’t she contacted her parents?  There’s definitely a lot more to the story.  With all this going on it did leave the show with one glaring weakness…Everything came too easy…Oliver’s breaking Helena out of the police station; Helena taking out over a half dozen cops with only a crossbow; and Oliver and Slade Wilson getting the drop on a group of soldiers and stealing a computer ship out of the surprisingly lightly guarded surface-to-air missile system.  This might have been the week to skip the flashbacks in light of everything else going on.

Watching it now after recording it the other day.  Just keep up what you're WB and avoid the pratfalls of SmallvilleArrow has been one of handful of surprises this season.

I love how in the Injustice God Among Us comics Harley makes fun of Green Arrow's lair being called the Arrow Cave and he's like "Like you can come up with something better" and she was like shouldn't it be the Quiver and he was all "Listen, you, wait...that is actually a lot better."

Or something like that.

Why did it go off the air for a couple of weeks when it had just come back from the split season hiatus that all shows seem to go through now?

I thought the flashbacks didn't really fit in with the rest of the story.
