Supernatural Episode Review 8.16

Dead Men Don't Walk Away

By Tim Janson     March 03, 2013

Sam and Dean are investigating the strange death of a man who seemed to have got up and walked away after being found dead.  Sure enough, as the boys check out the body in the morgue the man gets up moments later.  The man, who calls him shelf Shane, has no memory of who he really is before waking up after an avalanche seven years earlier.

The Winchesters soon come to the conclusion that the man may in reality be the Greek Titan Prometheus who is cursed to die every day as punishment from Zeus for giving mankind the gift of fire.  But things get even weirder for the boys when a woman named Haley shows up with a young boy to find Shane.  Her son is afflicted with the same curse as Prometheus, revealing that the boy is the titan’s son.  In order to try and save the boy from the daily torment, the boys have to summon Zeus in order to force him to lift the curse.  But Zeus is less than agreeable and has his daughter Artemis to back him up.
Supernatural has featured mythical Gods numerous times over the years and they’ve often been some of the best episodes, such as season fives, “Hammer of the Gods”, but this episode was somewhat flat.  This story felt like it was written in the wee hours of the morning on the day of a deadline by a guy who had been out partying all night.  The episode crawled along at a snail’s pace with precious little of the signature Supernatural humor.  Dean did have a great line about he and Sam being Men of Letters “Legacies” which elicited a chuckle or two.
Considering Zeus was the head of the Greek Pantheon you’d think he might be somewhat more…impressive.  The Winchesters have faced ghosts and demons that gave them more trouble than the most powerful Olympian God.  Somehow I’m thinking Zeus cannot be killed by an arrow from his own daughter.  At least they finally found some use for all those books they found in the stash of the Men of Letters.
An entirely throwaway episode this week but on positive side, the preview for next week’s episode looks great.

I agree with the grade.  A meh filler episode.

Horrible show, horrible acting (Padalecki and Ackles, I never know which one of you is worse.  "Model Face"
"Ackles or "Constantly Surprised" Padalecki.)

This series should have ended at Season Five.  Awful, awful, awful ever since.

Let someone else save the world from now on.

I didn't like the ending but I thought it was an okay episode.  Making sure it was an eagle picking at roadkill Prometheus was a nice bit of attention to detail.

By this time, I'm thinking any god with at least two functioning brain cells would not want to be on the same continent as the Winchester boys, much less in the same building.  I mean, they've been the cause of death, directly or indirectly, for, what?  At least a dozen gods?  Throw in being involved in the deaths of two archangels, the king of the Leviathans, most of the high ranking demons, the Whore of Babylon, and the mother of all monsters, plus the incapacitaion of another god, a number of Leviathans, a Knight of Hell, three of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and two more archangels, and I'm thinking Sam and Dean hold the title for being the two most dangerous beings on Earth.

I agree with the C grade but not to say it wasn't a bad episode.  I enjoyed it as well.  The ending left me a bit off.  Not sure what kind of payoff I was looking for but overall enjoyed it for what it was.
