With JJ Abrams off in a galaxy far far away, the fate of the third Star Trek has been left in question. Initially it was believed that Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) was going to helm the third Trek film. Now it seems as if Bad Robot and JJ Abrams collaborator Roberto Orci will direct Star Trek 3. Deadline broke the exclusive news over the weekend that Orci is in talks with Paramount. The even bigger deal to this story is that this would be Orci’s directorial debut.

He was involved with Abrams on the first two Treks. What do you think Maniacs?

It looks like it's official. I saw Karl Urban at the Ottawa comic con over the weekend. During his Q&A panel, he pretty much confirmed Orci will direct it and they start shooting early next year.

He kept praising Orci saying "don't wory, this guy gets Star Trek. The fans will be happy"

I'm glad to hear that Karl Urban is relaxed about it and as a writer Orci may well "get" Star Trek but that doesn't mean he knows anything about directing. This is a big gig to debut with and he might want to have a chat with Wally Pfister about what not to do before he gets going on this.

The Russo brothers had never directed a big budget movie before. That turned out to be a good decision.

Would Paramount place an investment of at least 150 million dollars into the hands of a person to direct a film that has no prior directing credits to his or her name? Wouldn't that be like placing that kind of money in the hands of a person to build a spictacular, expensive building but has no prior experience as a head contractor. Oh but he colaborated with the head contractor on the first two huge buildings, but he was never in the "big chair." There's a huge difference between watching as a genious creates magic from the side lines and being the guy who is making the moment by moment decisions that take something that could just "sit there" and make it incredible. I would want to see Roberto's demo reel of previous directing work before I hand him the reins to a franchise worth billions.

Orci might get Trek, but the crap that was wrong with Into Darkness was his fault and any other writers that worked on it.  Screw this guy.  He sucks a big bag of cocks.

It's too early in the morning for this shit....

rogue188 5/12/2014 8:40:29 AM

Yeah, this is the same guy that put a pair of robot balls on Devastator. No thanks.

ElBaz13 5/12/2014 9:04:56 AM

Actually, he only put one ball on Devastator. Alex Kurtzman put the other. So that means there is only a 50% chance testicules are added to something that shouldn't have them.

rogue188 5/12/2014 9:51:50 AM

So 50% chance for balls on the Enterprise?

Just stay the HELL away from any more classic villains.  You made your own universe...do something different with it!
