Jim battles… Jim?

No matter how hard the creators try, No Ordinary Family is just… awkward. As stated before, they’re having trouble balancing the family-friendliness of the show with the serialized plot that contains some dark overtones. The show finally moves forward in this episode as the Powells (Michael Chilis, Julie Benz) become aware of Dr. King (Stephen Collins) and vice-versa. But it’s so clumsy as it moves forward.

To the creators’ credit, at least Mystique… er, um, shape-shifting Victoria (Lost alumna Rebecca Mader) was killed this episode. It was wearing thin in the 40-some minutes of this episode as she kept assuming the forms of the Powell family, who did not catch on, especially since they have a telepath in the family. Taking Jim’s form, they fight but it’s Jim who kills her in the end. And it was obvious at the beginning when Stephanie walks in and sees his dead body that it was Victoria before flashing back. That device just didn’t work.

In the case of the Powell kids (Kay Panabaker, Jimmy Bennett), they use their powers when they shouldn’t and don’t use them when they should. Daphne is making it a habit of controlling minds, but she should’ve done it the most with the murderer of JJ’s would-be girlfriend, she waffles. It just doesn’t make sense, which is why this show can be so awkward. The potential to be good is there, especially as Stephanie pretends to be Victoria to get into King’s good graces, but it feels so anti-climactic.
