Otakon - Geneon Panel

By Marc Lunden     August 12, 2004

The panel was led by Chad Kime and Stephen Tang.

Things started off with Stephen leading the audience in an amusing group pronunciation of the Geneon name.

Then it was time for the list of new licenses, done via trailer disc, and accompanied by estimated release times: Star Ocean EX (January 2005), Human Crossing (February 2005), Tokyo Underground (February 2005), Koikaze (March 2005), Ultra Maniac (April 2005), Le Portrait de Petit Cossette (late summer/fall 2005), Kyou Kara Maou (mid-2005), and Jubei-chan 2 ("sometime in 2005"). There was also a quick confirmation that the license for Tetsujin 28 includes the live-action film and the TV series.

Right into Q&A next:

A question was asked regarding the remaining Kare Kano OSTs, to which the response was "just wait until 2005." There are currently no plans to release Geneon titles on any other formats (i.e., any new video formats). Onmyoji 2 will not receive a theatrical release. The Ikki Tousen release was confirmed as being made from the R2 DVD masters. It was not known exactly which, if any, of the Popotan R2 extras were slated to be on the R1 release. Shin Getter Robo was confirmed as being scheduled for early 2005. Chad and Stephen were "90% sure" that the éX-Driver movie is anamorphic. The theatrical release for Appleseed is planned to expand beyond the initial list of theaters. The "Lil' Slugger" name in Paranoia Agent was decided upon based on the fact that there's a wide audience for the title based on the success of previous Satoshi Kon works, and so the decision to come up with a non-Japanese name was made. "Requiem from the Darkness" was the licensor-approved title for marketing that particular show outside of Japan. It was not know whether the Ultra Maniac OAV had also been licensed. In response to a question about future live-action releases, it was stated that Geneon is intending to get (back) into doing live-action releases, as they had done some in the past but have recently been focusing more on anime.

The panel was fairly brief as the remainder of the hour and a half allotted to Geneon was to be given over to angela.
