Otakon - Production I.G, King Records

By Marc Lunden     August 04, 2004

The panel was led by Maki Terashima-Furuta and Satoshi Fuji from Production I.G, and two representatives from King Records.

King Records presented a DVD containing a series of clips comprising "A History of Anime" produced via its Star Child label. The clips were mostly OP sequences, and one of the King Records reps provided a brief mention of which company owned each title as they came up. Each title received varying amounts of cheering from fans in the room. The titles included Nuku Nuku TV, Sorcerer Hunters, Evangelion, Nadesico, Utena, Kare Kano, FLCL (which was a combination of clips from the show and the music video for "Ride on Shooting Star" by The Pillows), Love Hina, Fruits Basket, and Samurai Deeper Kyo (here it was mentioned that Geneon would be releasing the soundtrack), along with a short list of others read by one of the reps.

Next was another King Records DVD with clips for more recent shows: Stellvia, Jubei-chan 2 (here it was mentioned that the show would be announced at the next panel, i.e. the Geneon panel), Asagiri no Miko (the show was mentioned as unlicensed, although Media Blasters does indeed hold the license), Da Capo (with a hint that a license might be announced sometime in the next few months), Bottle Fairy, Battle Programmer Shirase, Doki Doki School Hours, Rouran, Iron Man (Tetsujin) 28, and Soukyuu no Fafner.

Production I.G mentioned a bit about how they're currently doing animation for more commercials and music video projects (such as recently animating a music video for a Russian band). They then showed a trailer for Innocence (the 6-minute trailer that hit the Internet a while back), and followed that up with some brief information about the film: its $18 million budget and 4 years in production, and descriptions of the 4 different upcoming R2 DVD releases (Maki was very insistent that we all go and buy the $500 version).

Then it was Q&A time. The King Records DVDs were fairly long, so there wasn't that much time left for questions, although some good ones were asked.

Kill Bill:
Quentin Tarantino had come to Production I.G asking for them to work on the animation sequence for his movie. He had storyboarded the whole sequence himself, and then spent 3-4 hours in a hotel room acting all of it out in front of some Production I.G reps and Kazuto Nakazawa (director). He wanted the sequence to be really bloody, and once it was finished, he requested that it be made bloodier. Maki: "We're really good at that, too."

Sequels?:
Will there be more Blood? They would like to do a sequel, and much longer than the first, but only if they can get more money (to which someone called out that we should buy the $500 Innocence release). Will there be more Evangelion? The response, in jest, was to think of Fafner as Eva 2. Will there be more IGPX? That is a question for Cartoon Network. Will there be another Sakura Taisen movie? I.G said they'd make our interest known. Will there be more Stellvia? "We're planning on it," said one of the King Records reps.

Misc.:
For the parade scene in Innocence, the staff had traveled to Hong Kong for references. Production I.G are not involved at all with the live-action Evangelion movie project, and are not happy about it. Someone asked about the ending(s) for Evangelion, and after some brief consultation one of the King Records reps gave an answer in Japanese (which, for those who didn't catch it, amounted basically to "I don't know"). A question was asked about the late Ritsuko Okazaki and her music, to which the answer was that a special compilation is forthcoming. One of our own AoD'ers asked a question about the extent of the U.S. theatrical release, to which Maki replied that they're trying to get the film into as many theaters as possible, while also lightheartedly nagging poor "TEMUJIN" about not going to the DreamWorks panel the day before to get that information.

There were four or five questions that were inaudible from where I was sitting, and at least that many more that were partially inaudible. I also failed to catch the names of the two King Records representatives. I apologize for missing those questions and names, and for any incorrect information presented here that resulted from missing parts of others.
