Our 10 Batman 3 Villains Casting Call

The Rogue's Gallery for the Next Batman Film

By Joe Oesterle     July 30, 2009
Source: www.JoeArtistWriter.com

The critical and commercial success of Christian Bale as Batman proved to be stronger than the Bat-movies of only a couple of decades ago. Jack Nicholson didn’t disappoint as the Joker, but the casting of villains after that were questionable at best. While Michelle Pfeiffer was perfectly as the slinky and seductive Catwoman, Danny DeVito’s Penguin was superfluous and unsophisticated. That said, Batman’s potential rogue’s gallery is so appealing even the savior, Christopher Nolan, can’t control himself from throwing in the Scarecrow where he is not needed. (Or cast well for that matter.) So we’re dusting off the casting couch for The Dark Knight 3’s villains. Here’s what we’re thinking…

Batman Villains

1. Catwoman

Sometimes the obvious choice is the best choice, and that’s why we’re going with Angelina Jolie. She’s done action (Laura Croft) she’s done serious (A Mighty Heart) she’s done intense (Girl, Interrupted) she’s done comedy (Kung Fu Panda) and she’s done crazy-sexy (see every movie mentioned above, including Kung Fu Panda.) The point is, no one is going get Batman’s utility belt off quicker than pouty-lipped Angie in a pair of tight black pants and ankle-high stilettos. We don’t need to reinvent the wheel here, Angelina is Catwoman.

Batman Villains

2. The Riddler

Yes, we’ve heard the rumors of Steve Buscemi or Johnny Depp might play the Prince of Puzzles, and either one would undoubtedly work, but what if we split the difference and call it Ed Norton. Norton can do creepy and charming. The Riddler realizes the public sees him as a second-rate Joker, and that kind of thing doesn’t sit well with an insecure genius. Norton has played awkward opposite Brad Pitt in Fight Club, and he was absolutely terrifying in American History X, there’s no reason to doubt he could go from Marvel anti-hero (The Hulk) to DC bad guy with a smoother transition than any crossover comic book ever did.

Batman Villains

3. The Penguin

Oswald Cobblepot is a powerful man with a serious complex about his bodily presence. The nickname “Penguin” is an insult to him. It reminds him of his physical flaws--too short, too chubby, grotesquely large nose. Cobblepot enjoys his position as one of the most feared crime bosses in all of Gotham, and while he endeavors to carry himself with a certain dignity, and prefers to let his henchmen do his dirty work, now and then, The Penguin’s animal side rears its vicious head, and that’s when the blood really spills. It would take an actor with a certain physicality as well as the proper gravitas to pull off a role like this. That actor is Bob Hoskins.

Batman Villains

4. Killer Croc

If all you’ve ever seen Mickey Rourke in was, The Wrestler, then that’s all you need to know about him as Killer Croc. Rourke is famous for his volatile personality both on and off the set. He could easily portray both the immense rage as well as the limitless despair of Waylon Jones--a man born with a medical condition that made him look so much like a crocodile; he once tried to make an honest living as a circus freak. Plus Rourke wouldn’t require very much make up for the role.

Batman Villains

5. Poison Ivy

This one’s a toss-up. The safe choice would be Nicole Kidman. She certainly can play cool and aloof at the same time she’s playing sexually inviting. Poison Ivy’s disdain for men wouldn’t be that hard to grasp for the ex-wife of Tom Cruise, and her natural coloring-- pale white skinand flame red hair are perfect for the role. Her rival for the part of the alluring eco-terrorist however is new-comer, Deborah Ann Woll. Woll is best known for her role as teenage vampire girl, Jessica Hamby on HBO’s True Blood. Woll has shown some amazing range in that one character, which leads us to believe she can handle botanist turned super villain Pamela Isely.

Batman Villains

6. The Scarecrow

We shouldn’t waste too much time on this pick, because the role has been (mis)cast twice already, but Jonathan Crane was a notorious outsider his whole life. Boys picked on him, women laughed at him. Cillian Murphy (Who played the Scarecrow in two previous movies) obviously got laid in high school. Apologies to Howard Stern, who believes he was born to play the role, but Crispin Glover was the perfect choice for the role of the criminally twisted psychiatrist.

Batman Villains

7. Hugo Strange

If we have to explain this one, you shouldn’t be reading this website, but we’re all too busy here congratulating ourselves on this pick to care. Is there anyone else in Hollywood who you honestly believe possesses the cruel perverse intellect to create an army of gigantic, mindless, cannibalistic Monster Men more than John Malcovich? We didn’t think so. Next!

Batman Villains

8. Talia al Ghul

Olivia Wilde has the confidence, the brains and the exotic beauty to pull of the role of the Demon’s Daughter. Wilde is hot enough for Maxim magazine, commercial enough for The OC, and more than talented enough to play the role of the woman who will not rest until she marries, bears the child of, and then possibly subsequently murders Bruce Wayne.

Batman Villains

9. Mr. Zsasz

The serial killer who slays with the very same knife he then carves a tally mark on his own flesh would have to be an intimidating fellow, but he’d also have to have enough charisma for his would-be victims to feel at ease before his homicidal tendencies kick in. He’d have to be a strong, athletic type, but he would also need to boast an intelligence and a gift of gab. Jason Statham is the correct choice.

Batman Villains

10. The Ventriloquist

Hear us out. We know you think of Larry David as a purely comic actor, but there is no doubt the guy has some personal demons. Physically David is the perfect choice to portray the timid and reluctantly murderous, Arnold Wesker, plus he’s already supplied the voice of the darkly comic dummy, George Steinbrenner on Seinfeld. Is there any no doubt he could pull of a 1920’s gangster voice as Wesker’s pinstriped, cigar-chewing, menacing dummy, Scarface?

Mr. Zsasz was already cast in Batman Begins by an actor named Tim Booth.

And, since Nolan uses actors of quality (Katie Holmes not withstanding) and likes them never to have played a character anywhere near the established characters of the comic books, I'd have to say that these choices are kind of uninspiring and even boring.

Catwoman - Zooey Deschanel.

The Riddler - Sam Rockwell, can play menacing and if they use the Edward Nygma persona and origin from Bruce Timm's Batman, it could be well done instead of being another Joker.

The Penguin - Paul Giamatti. If I have to explain this, you have no imagination.

Killer Croc - Matthew McConaughey. Crazy? What says crazy more than banging on bongos in th nude at 3am?

Poison Ivy - Natalie Portman. Pamela Isley is an ecoterrorist, who just happens to be a botanist. Portman can definitely pull off the hot, brainy and crazy needed for Ivy.

Scarecrow - Paul Bettany or Christopher Eccleston. Both have that lanky creepiness and distorted features about them.

Hugo Strange - Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Hoffman will shave his head for a role, and he can do this character justice.

Talia al Ghul - Jennifer Connelly. It would definitely be a departure for her to play a villain, BUT I think she would do it right.

Mr. Zsasz - My first response wants to be Alan Tudyk, but he's already playing a character similar to this in Dollhouse. Screw it, Tudyk it is.

The Ventriloquist - Bryan Cranston (From 'Breaking Bad' and 'Malcolm in the Middle'). Can play both downtrodden little bitch, and tough guy.

Gotta say, trying to cast any of the Batman villains really depends on how they intend to interpret the character. I mean I think alot of us went "whah?" when Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker, but as it turns out, for that version of the Joker, he worked brilliantly, but if was going towards the more classic version of the Joker (more in tune with the Animated series Mark Hamil version), he might not have worked so well.

So far, he has been going for the more plausible villians, so I doubt we'll see Poison Ivy or Mr Freeze, Clayface or characters like that, so I think the villains we're likely to see are probably the Ventriloquist, the Riddler, Catwoman, or the Penguin. But casting? I'll trust them, cause they've done pretty well so far.

I like the list although, I think Murphy was a good choice as the Scarecrow. Also, I do think that if you do The Riddler, it has to be Depp. Depp brings so much star power and he is just a phenomenal actor.

I'm pretty sure though most of those villians wouldn't make the cut in Nolan's Batman. Some of them are a little too exotic, although in all honesty, I personally think Penguin is much easier to get across than Nolan gives him credit.

I would've liked to have had Black Mask on this list since Goyer briefly mentioned him once about possible villians in B3.

I say Mickey Rourke as Bane. That's right Bane.  He could fit in well to the grittier, more realistic (if an invincible guy in a bat costume can ever be realistic).  Start with Bane in prison in some third world shit hole.  Make him equally as talented a fighter.  He could escape and come to Gotham peddling a PCP/steriod like drug that makes average criminals "super" with Bane retaining the purest of the drug for himself.  Batman could be matched with brute force.

I am not a big comic fan, but what I know of Bane he could be really cool.  Many of the others (sans catwoman or the riddler if done right) seem to hokey to fit.

kissstation 7/30/2009 4:33:09 AM

I like the list and I like 'avidfan's idea for Rourke as Bane.  They could do a whole movie on Bane and Batman.  The story in the comic's was awesome and could go darker than the Dark Knight.  Like mentioned before, I trust the casting department with whomever they pick for the next villian if the same players are involved.

NotAFan 7/30/2009 4:36:49 AM

As Long as that Bastard Nolan has nothing to do with Part 3, I don't care who is in it! Keep that movie ruining bastard away from it at all costs! Crispin Glover as the Joker! Maybe he can right the wrongs Ledger did just so he could collect a paycheck without having to do the work!

kwsupes 7/30/2009 5:03:58 AM

I tend to agree with you guys that Nolan is probably going to head towards the more plausible villians. After the Joker's efforts to destroy the mob or consolidate it under him there could easily be a turf war over who gets to run Gotham's mob with the Joker being in the clink. With that said you could bring in the Penguin and the Black Mask as rival gangsters fighting over a piece of Gotham's pie. Another way they could go and  to recast Joker with Crispin Glover as NotAFan said. He could totally pull it off. I would like to see a realistic take on Mr. Freeze, but that probably won't happen yet and that is ok. NotAFan I disagree dude, Nolan is awesome and I trust him completely.

MrJawbreakingEquilibrium 7/30/2009 5:12:04 AM

Tsk, tsk, NotaFan.  Whatever.

Anyway, the list is pretty good.  I've never really thought about any of them before except Catwoman and Thalia.  For Catwoman Angela Jolie is the obvious choice but if I was going for the not so obvious I'd have to say somebody like Jordana Brewster - what happened to her?  As for Thalia I'm going to pick - forgot her name just now - the prostitute chick from Firefly; she's pretty exotic and a helluva actress.

hanso 7/30/2009 5:58:32 AM

Why would they recast the up&coming The Joker, played by a 28 year old Heath Ledger with a 45 year old Crispin Glover?

I like Emily Blunt for Catwoman.  Wouldn't be surprised to Marion Cottilard end up in the role either, now that she's working with Nolan in Inception.

Wiseguy 7/30/2009 6:51:53 AM

First of all you can't tell how old the Joker is with all that make up. Ledger looked 50 in costume, that's how ragged he looked. So age ain't no biggie

NotaFan, my man. I'm with you 100%. Get that fucking Nolan off of this. They'll never do the Bat world right when you shy away from the fantasy. That's why his two bat films suck so much
