Our 10 Batman 3 Villains Casting Call
The Rogue's Gallery for the Next Batman Film By Joe Oesterle
July 30, 2009
Source: www.JoeArtistWriter.com
The critical and commercial success of Christian Bale as Batman proved to be stronger than the Bat-movies of only a couple of decades ago. Jack Nicholson didn’t disappoint as the Joker, but the casting of villains after that were questionable at best. While Michelle Pfeiffer was perfectly as the slinky and seductive Catwoman, Danny DeVito’s Penguin was superfluous and unsophisticated. That said, Batman’s potential rogue’s gallery is so appealing even the savior, Christopher Nolan, can’t control himself from throwing in the Scarecrow where he is not needed. (Or cast well for that matter.) So we’re dusting off the casting couch for The Dark Knight 3’s villains. Here’s what we’re thinking…

1. Catwoman
Sometimes the obvious choice is the best choice, and that’s why we’re going with Angelina Jolie. She’s done action (Laura Croft) she’s done serious (A Mighty Heart) she’s done intense (Girl, Interrupted) she’s done comedy (Kung Fu Panda) and she’s done crazy-sexy (see every movie mentioned above, including Kung Fu Panda.) The point is, no one is going get Batman’s utility belt off quicker than pouty-lipped Angie in a pair of tight black pants and ankle-high stilettos. We don’t need to reinvent the wheel here, Angelina is Catwoman.

2. The Riddler
Yes, we’ve heard the rumors of Steve Buscemi or Johnny Depp might play the Prince of Puzzles, and either one would undoubtedly work, but what if we split the difference and call it Ed Norton. Norton can do creepy and charming. The Riddler realizes the public sees him as a second-rate Joker, and that kind of thing doesn’t sit well with an insecure genius. Norton has played awkward opposite Brad Pitt in Fight Club, and he was absolutely terrifying in American History X, there’s no reason to doubt he could go from Marvel anti-hero (The Hulk) to DC bad guy with a smoother transition than any crossover comic book ever did.

3. The Penguin
Oswald Cobblepot is a powerful man with a serious complex about his bodily presence. The nickname “Penguin” is an insult to him. It reminds him of his physical flaws--too short, too chubby, grotesquely large nose. Cobblepot enjoys his position as one of the most feared crime bosses in all of Gotham, and while he endeavors to carry himself with a certain dignity, and prefers to let his henchmen do his dirty work, now and then, The Penguin’s animal side rears its vicious head, and that’s when the blood really spills. It would take an actor with a certain physicality as well as the proper gravitas to pull off a role like this. That actor is Bob Hoskins.

4. Killer Croc
If all you’ve ever seen Mickey Rourke in was, The Wrestler, then that’s all you need to know about him as Killer Croc. Rourke is famous for his volatile personality both on and off the set. He could easily portray both the immense rage as well as the limitless despair of Waylon Jones--a man born with a medical condition that made him look so much like a crocodile; he once tried to make an honest living as a circus freak. Plus Rourke wouldn’t require very much make up for the role.

5. Poison Ivy
This one’s a toss-up. The safe choice would be Nicole Kidman. She certainly can play cool and aloof at the same time she’s playing sexually inviting. Poison Ivy’s disdain for men wouldn’t be that hard to grasp for the ex-wife of Tom Cruise, and her natural coloring-- pale white skinand flame red hair are perfect for the role. Her rival for the part of the alluring eco-terrorist however is new-comer, Deborah Ann Woll. Woll is best known for her role as teenage vampire girl, Jessica Hamby on HBO’s True Blood. Woll has shown some amazing range in that one character, which leads us to believe she can handle botanist turned super villain Pamela Isely.

6. The Scarecrow
We shouldn’t waste too much time on this pick, because the role has been (mis)cast twice already, but Jonathan Crane was a notorious outsider his whole life. Boys picked on him, women laughed at him. Cillian Murphy (Who played the Scarecrow in two previous movies) obviously got laid in high school. Apologies to Howard Stern, who believes he was born to play the role, but Crispin Glover was the perfect choice for the role of the criminally twisted psychiatrist.

7. Hugo Strange
If we have to explain this one, you shouldn’t be reading this website, but we’re all too busy here congratulating ourselves on this pick to care. Is there anyone else in Hollywood who you honestly believe possesses the cruel perverse intellect to create an army of gigantic, mindless, cannibalistic Monster Men more than John Malcovich? We didn’t think so. Next!

8. Talia al Ghul
Olivia Wilde has the confidence, the brains and the exotic beauty to pull of the role of the Demon’s Daughter. Wilde is hot enough for Maxim magazine, commercial enough for The OC, and more than talented enough to play the role of the woman who will not rest until she marries, bears the child of, and then possibly subsequently murders Bruce Wayne.

9. Mr. Zsasz
The serial killer who slays with the very same knife he then carves a tally mark on his own flesh would have to be an intimidating fellow, but he’d also have to have enough charisma for his would-be victims to feel at ease before his homicidal tendencies kick in. He’d have to be a strong, athletic type, but he would also need to boast an intelligence and a gift of gab. Jason Statham is the correct choice.

10. The Ventriloquist
Hear us out. We know you think of Larry David as a purely comic actor, but there is no doubt the guy has some personal demons. Physically David is the perfect choice to portray the timid and reluctantly murderous, Arnold Wesker, plus he’s already supplied the voice of the darkly comic dummy, George Steinbrenner on Seinfeld. Is there any no doubt he could pull of a 1920’s gangster voice as Wesker’s pinstriped, cigar-chewing, menacing dummy, Scarface?
Mr. Zsasz was already cast in Batman Begins by an actor named Tim Booth.
And, since Nolan uses actors of quality (Katie Holmes not withstanding) and likes them never to have played a character anywhere near the established characters of the comic books, I'd have to say that these choices are kind of uninspiring and even boring.
Catwoman - Zooey Deschanel.
The Riddler - Sam Rockwell, can play menacing and if they use the Edward Nygma persona and origin from Bruce Timm's Batman, it could be well done instead of being another Joker.
The Penguin - Paul Giamatti. If I have to explain this, you have no imagination.
Killer Croc - Matthew McConaughey. Crazy? What says crazy more than banging on bongos in th nude at 3am?
Poison Ivy - Natalie Portman. Pamela Isley is an ecoterrorist, who just happens to be a botanist. Portman can definitely pull off the hot, brainy and crazy needed for Ivy.
Scarecrow - Paul Bettany or Christopher Eccleston. Both have that lanky creepiness and distorted features about them.
Hugo Strange - Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Hoffman will shave his head for a role, and he can do this character justice.
Talia al Ghul - Jennifer Connelly. It would definitely be a departure for her to play a villain, BUT I think she would do it right.
Mr. Zsasz - My first response wants to be Alan Tudyk, but he's already playing a character similar to this in Dollhouse. Screw it, Tudyk it is.
The Ventriloquist - Bryan Cranston (From 'Breaking Bad' and 'Malcolm in the Middle'). Can play both downtrodden little bitch, and tough guy.
