Now that the battle of the Snow White movies is over, it’s time to look forward to the clash of the Wizard of Oz reinterpretations on the horizon: there’s an animated take starring the voice of Lea Michele, a CG/stop-motion version from the co-director of Corpse Bride, and Disney’s live action prequel, Oz the Great and Powerful. We’ll focus on the latter of the three for now.

Disney doesn’t own the rights to the 1939 classic — so there won’t be any ruby slippers in Oz the Great and Powerful – but the film poster is still packed with plenty of the imagery we know well from L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel and the Judy Garland-starring movie. There’s the yellow brick road, the wizard’s hot air balloon, quite the large mass of tornadoes, and the Emerald City shining in the distance. Check out the poster below.

Among the cast are Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis, Zach Braff, and James Franco as Oz – or Oscar, as he’s known at the beginning of his story when he finds himself whisked away from a Kansas circus to that magical land over the rainbow.

The film’s own yellow brick road points straight to San Diego – director Sam Raimi will be on hand to discuss it at Comic-Con on July 12. For more on what’s in store for the annual gathering of all things geek – including why Raimi initially resisted reading the Oz script.

Thanks to Chopsaki for the submission.

This could be interesting if they do it properly! I mean the whole battle of Snow White this year was sort of a bust! I mean both movies had flaws and good points. Now let's just hope that they learn from this year's mistakes and do something properly!

The ruby slippers shouldn't be a big issue since they were silver in the book anyway.  I'm up for this.  I'm also interested to see Wicked adapted.  The play is amazing.  The book is awful.

I liked Tin Man.  Thought it was clever though the star is not the best actress.  This though I am worried about.
