One of Miyazaki's and Takahata's earlier films has finally been released in the U.S. by Pioneer. As soon as the package arrived, I quickly put it into the Anime Cafe's DVD player.
The Video quality is superb, considering its age. On the set up I used to watch this film, nothing wrong could be found. The only negative part of the video is the very dated animation quality of the first of the two films, but that is understandable considering this movie's age (1972.) The Second film improves the animation quality a lot.
Audio is presented in both English and Japanese Stereo. No faults were found in either.
The Menus have some animation playing on the side of the screen, with the pointer being a Panda's paw print. The selections move quickly, and there is some nice background music that plays gently in the background.
The extras that were included on this disc include short information regarding Takahata and Miyazaki, with mentions of several of both masters' films.
Where this disc really shines however, is the content in general. As one would expect from a film with Takahata's and Miyazaki's names in the credits, the film is superb. The film really catches a child's innocence and allows its viewer to share in the fantastic adventures of this little girl and the Pandas.
An excellent family film that should be shared with not only the children in the household, but and experience to share with the adults as well.
