Plans to have Alex Proyas tackle the adaptation of John Milton's classic poem Paradise Lost has officially been shelved over at Legendary Pictures. Variety reports the project felt to pieces when producers couldn't find a way to resolve the budgetary concerns, with the trade hearing from sources that the technology to pull the film off wasn't there. At least in a cost-effective way.

The turn back to development hell has freed up the schedule for the locked in cast of Bradley Cooper, Benjamin Walker, Rufus Sewell, Dominic Purcell, Casey Affleck, Callan McAuliff and Camilla Belle.

The film was to focus on a war in heaven and the rivalry between the archangels Michael and Lucifer. Reports from last year indicated the plan was to focus on heavy special effects including aerial battles between the characters.

Thanks to lusiphur for the submission.

Seems like the religious not jobs will be happy about this one....wouldn't even be surprised if they were involved in the pulling of this movie.

Man this is a bummer I was stoked to see this. With technology where it is now in filmmaking it makes me wonder what they were trying to do that they couldn't make happen within 100 million plus budget.

I doubt the "religious nuts" had anything to do with this. The production has been delayed mutliple times due to budget and scheduling conflicts.

I'm religious, but not a nut job.  This could have been pretty entertaining.  And again, it could have sucked.

This will probably be made eventually, just maybe not anytime soon.

Hmm, the plot of this movie is  terrible compared to the source material of Paradise Lost. The story is supposed to be about Satan rallying his forces to establish Hell, and then traveling to Eden to tempt Eve and Adam. I understand the focus on battle a for Heaven, but ummmmm, it would be better served to keep with the storyline and see just what made Paradise Lost such a literary treasure.

I think the delusional nuts that always blame the religious nuts are funny with their conspiracies

Anyway sad news, maybe Proyas can take it to another studio willing to take a gamble.

Paradise Lost is somehwat credited with the modern version of angels as The Bible isn't very descriptive. That being said why even link it to the epic poem. I am going to go out on a limb and say 90% of people don't know about the poem. It is extremly hard to read. I am sure very few people have even read it.

That being said, I would like to see a good angel war movie. But while CG and digital sfx were to lower the cost of film making and add extra dimensions to it. It seems to have created a ballooning cost. I am not so sure what they pay those guys but its way to much.

Hey decepticons2, didn't you see Legion?  Oh wait, you said a GOOD angel war movie.

The only good think to take away from Legion was the visuals of what a decent Hawkman could look like.  :)

 Well, that's a bummer.
