Paramount Pictures has preemptively picked up the rights to Monster Zoo, says the Hollywood Reporter. The production will be based off an upcoming graphic novel from Doug TenNapel, for a live-action adaptation that will be produced by Sam Raimi and Josh Donen via their Buckaroo Entertainment banner and Gotham Group's Ellen Goldsmith-Vein. No writer is attached yet to adapt the screenplay.

Plot Concept: The action-adventure story is set in motion when an ancient idol is unearthed and transported to a zoo in the U.S. There, the idol's spirit awakens and starts to mutate the caged animals. A group of teenagers must band together to try to stop the idol and the evil from destroying the world. The graphic novel will be published in May from Image Comics.

Because, you know, the government and the military would be useless against mutated zoo animals. That's the sort of thing teenagers are specially equipped to deal with.

I liked the Relic too (loved the book) but this seems different. Do these kids have powers or are the super smart or something. Sounds like a movie that will be focused on the tweens to me.

I'd have to agree aegrant. The 80's are over. The rag-tag group of young misfits has been played out. I can see a situation where a group of teens get locked in and have to ban together to get out a live.
I'd like to see Raimi do the writing with his brother and get some of that goofiness that we got with the Evil Deads put in.
So now Hollywood is stalking writters and optioning material BEFORE it's even published? I hope they wait to see if it's successful. Probably not.
