Look out, Barsoom! John Carter, Warlord of Mars (along with his pals Tars Tarkas, Jeddak of Thark and Dejah Thoris, Martian Princess,) may be on their way to a screen near you. ICV2.com reports that Paramount Pictures recently optioned the entire, eleven volume, Edgar Rice Burroughs (creator of Tarzan) series for a mere $300,000. (Although, in the event that a movie is actually made from the series, the payment increases to a heft $2 million.)
Apparently, Disney had been trying to develop John Carter projects, both as animated and live-action features (with Tom Cruise attached, no less.) Now it befalls Alphaville Productions (the producers of The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, and The Scorpion King through Universal Pictures) to bring the character to life.
The Warlord of Mars appeared in the pages of Dell comics from 1952-63, Gold Key comics in 1964, and Marvel Comics from 1977-79.
