It's looking like those rumors that this next Ethan Hunt adventure will serve as a reboot are coming true. So says Mike Fleming at Deadline NY who reports that Paula Patton is the latest cast in the production which is now just called Mission: Impossible. Patton will be joining the previously confirmed stars Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames.

The website reports the actress who starred in Deja Vu and Precious had to beat out Lauren German and Kristen Kreuk for the role of a young operative who teams up with Hunt. With production scheduled to roll this fall, helmer Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Ratatouille) is making his live-action directorial debut for Paramount, based on a script by Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec. J.J. Abrams is producing.

oh no it looks like the same old plot is starting to hash out again- love story with a side of rogue agent. I'll wait for a trailer but have no hopes for it.

How can it be a reboot with Cruise in it?  Prequel maybe?  Not a good idea so far.

Hmmmm. Maybe. I hope they get back to the core of a TEAM & get away from it being all about superstar Tom.

I think there should be a constitutional amendment banning reboots and sequels to reboots.  I'm sick of them.  If you don't know how to take characters and go forward with them instead of backwards, don't waste my time.

A reboot? WTF?

Muenster 9/2/2010 4:46:11 AM

Reboot? That seems silly. M:I's1 and 2 were alright. II was really, really, really stupid but it seems uneccesary to call it a reboot, especially with two of the main actor stills in it. Go figure.

Calling this movie a "reboot" is probably a misuse of the term.  If anything, it's a transitional film that will likely phase out Ethan Hunt from the franchise and pass the torch to a new main character, possibly Jeremy Renner's.  I read elsewhere online that there's a possibilty that the film may not even be called Mission: Impossible 4 at all, but have some kind of title that still connects it to the "universe" of the series, kinda like how The Dark Knight didn't have "Batman" in the title, but everyone knew it was still a Batman movie.

First of all when I read the title of the article and it said Patton was in MI:4 I thought that it said Pattonson and thought "Oh great the crappy vampire from Twilight is in MI:4?"

Second as many people have said how can this be a reboot when both Tom and Ving are still in it? This can't be a reboot it's a sequel

This is news to me, I was informed that this was a sequel and not a reboot at all.

I wonder where Jarrod got the idea that it was a reboot to begin with.

I'm thinking the same thing rgtchtiger is.  It's not a re-boot but a sort of new start for this new team of agents.  I also read the Tom would be in one more after this and then leave the franchise to Renner.
