In early talks for the role

With the casting of Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the role of Sandman, it appears that Paul Rudd is now a shoe in for Ant-Man. The Wrap broke the exclusive story that Rudd is in fact in negotiations for the title role in Edgar Wright’s superhero comedy.

“Representatives for Marvel and Rudd had no comment”. Which isn’t really surprising considering they didn't announce officially Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch for Avengers: Age of Ultron until much later.

Rudd is an interesting choice as he has done dramatic work in the early part of of career, though lately it has been all comedies. Before we are quick to judge Marvel's decision, let us remember when we heard that Robert Downey Jr. was going to play Iron man.

Ant-Man arrives July 31st, 2015

He's ok...not the first choice but I feel he's not the worste either.

I like it.  Not my first choice either, but I think it will work.

Can Rudd be a more seroius actor... sure he can. He doesn't need to be a buff action hero type, because Hank Pym is a scientist 1st not a super hero... But what gets me is that this is being classified as a "superhero comedy" WTF? He is not funny in either the original or ultimate universe.

They already took away Ulton from Pym and now they are going to make him some kind of a joke. When I hear superhero comedy I think Plasticman or the like.

I wish we could see the screen play test reading that they make the decisions off of. I really think that would alleviate a lot of people trepidation to these casting choices.

I personally have not seen any of his movies.  At least I do not think I have as his name does not come to mind.  To me he at least looks like he can pull off Pym.  I hope they go for that slightly arrogant, nerdy personality that Pym has in the comics.  Hell, all this Rudd guy has to do is watch Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heros and copy the depiction of Pym down to the letter.  Then it would be perfect.

I also do not like that they are doing Ant-Man as a "superhero comedy". Not cool at all.

I'm fine with this news myself. But Wright himself has said that this is not a comedy. He said that there would be some comedic elements but it wouldn't be a "straight up comedy." For proof look at the test footage of Ant Man in action. I've watched it a number of times and there's nothing funny about it. In fact it's pretty damn cool.

To those who object to Paul Rudd as Antman without seeing the script or how the character will be executed or what he is capable of I give you :

Robert Downey Jr. and Heath Ledger

CalamityJohnson 12/19/2013 8:52:00 AM

we nerds are such worrywarts... RDJ as Iron Man, Heath Ledger as Joker, Michael Keaton as Batman? Chill out.

@redvector - That is good news. Thanks for that.
