Atlantis Studios issued a press release this weekend alerting us to the development of a feature-length, live-action film based on thier character 'Paula Peril'. Created by writer James Watson, Paula Peril is an investigative journalist who tends to run afoul of the city's super-villains, landing her in one nefarious death-trap after another.
The film, 'Paula Peril: Midnight is the Darkest Hour' will be an indie affair from New Phoenix Filmworks. Starring in the title role is Valerie Perez, who is recognizable to fans for starring in the fan film 'Tomb Raider: Tears of the Dragon' and has drawn the eye of numerous comic book fanboys by showing up at comic conventions modeling a Wonder Woman costume.
In fact, Perez was initially hired by Watson to model for photographs as Paula. This lead to a seven minute short film called 'Paula Peril: Trapped in the Flames'. Perez expressed her enthusiasm for the 1940s-style comics and the film in an interview on the movie's website.
"I LOVE film noir movies and Indiana Jones type predicaments! The role of a determined, deft, and daring woman like Paula Peril in this genre mix is a whole lotta fun," said Perez. "What I liked best about her is that she is one of the few new heroines that people can relate to in real life. Her scale of limitations is very realistic."
'Midnight' is set to film in San Diego with an eye towards an April 2008 release date. Andy Rodriguez-McCradic is directing the film from his own screenplay. The relatively unknown castmembers include Val Tasso, Chris King and Andres De La Fuente.
New Phoenix , which has just launced PaulaPerilMovie.net promoting the film.
