Despite previous reports that suggested incoming director Shane Black would write the screenplay for Walt Disney's Iron Man 3, it seems that screenwriter Drew Pearce has won that gig by showcasing his talent over at Marvel Studios. Deadline reports that Pearce received the job after writing a script treatment for another upcoming comic film Runaways, a Marvel project based on the cult comic by Brian K. Vaughn.

Other heroic efforts by Pearce include the UK TV show "No Heroics", which centers on a bar hangout for superheroes, who aren't allowed to use their superpowers while drinking. A theatrical take of that premise was also in the works but Disney and Marvel are currently focusing on the bigger titles at the moment.

Shane Black is still on track to direct the third installment being distributed by Disney while Robert Downey Jr. is confirmed as returning to the role of Tony Stark.

The screenwriter hiring comes just a few weeks after Black revealed that "Iron Man 3 will not be another 'two men in iron suits fighting each other' film. Instead, it will be more like a Tom Clancy-thriller, with Iron Man fighting real world villians."

Iron Man 3 will fly into theaters May 3, 2013.

Thanks to Calibur454 for the submission.

Me likes what I hear. I loved the first and didnt hate the second. I just wonder what real world villian(s) he is going to go up against?

That's actually a great idea, have Tony taking on A.I.M. or the Magia or something... I know they are not real world villains, and both use supervillain type henchmen, but I think Tony vs one of Marvels crime organizations could be really cool.

I'm still wondering what he means by "real world villains" and although I'm looking forward to this I really wanted the Mandarin. Maybe this'll end up being about some corporate espionage leading to the Mandarin for either IM4 or Avengers 2. One way or the other they have to address the Ten Rings and that better be the goddamn Mandarin or I will be pissed off

wessmith1966 4/1/2011 6:15:32 AM

The only problem I see with IM3 focusing on "real world" villains is that there doesn't seem to be much of a danger element for Iron Man in that. He's the most advanced weapon in the world, so I don't see A.I.M. soldiers armed with missles or whatever being much of a challenge for him. If I want Tom Clancy I'll watch a Jack Ryan movie. This is an Iron Man movie. I want Iron Man battling one of his rogues gallery while his personal/professional life gets put through the ringer somehow. I'd like to see a crisis of the soul because of an innocent being harmed from collateral damage during a battle. Maybe have the public turn on IM because of it. No, I really don't want a Tom Clancyish Iron Man.

I like your ideas, Wessmith. You consistently have good plot elements for superhero movies. Whether the Power-That-Be go that route we can't say.

IM went a against a (fictional) real-world villain in the first one, complete with boardroom drama, so I really don't see a problem here.

redvector 4/1/2011 7:23:57 AM

@ Monkeyfoot this will still be a Marvel movie so they won't stand for it to stray too much from what worked before.

Bmfstunner 4/1/2011 7:34:42 AM

And in other news...Marvel announces that it will remake Iron Man in 2015.

makabriel 4/1/2011 7:37:52 AM

@Wessmith. Go watch Ironman 1 and 2.  I agree with the direction they are going.  You can only rewrite the "Ironman on top, Iron man gets beatup by villain, Ironman has crisis, Ironman pulls through, Ironman defeats willain" script so many times.

If by Tom Clancy they mean "international thriler,"  I'm for that.  Maybe Stark International expands into China and the Mandarin is involved somehow.  Throwing in Crimson Dynamo or Titanium Man would fit well with this, as would bringing back Black Widow, but...
