The Review!
I agree with what everybody has said about the audio/visual quality. This is basically a content review.

A quick plug, first, for people who like anime music videos. I like this anime enough to make an anime music video using footage from it. If you're interested, it can be downloaded from http://locu.st/. It will also be shown at Otakon in August. Please give me some feedback if you decide to download it :) It's a 44MB VCD spec mpeg. :) On to the review...

Now, don't get me wrong, but the plot left a little to be desired. I thoroughly enjoyed this anime, and as the first real psycho-thriller anime released stateside, it does a bang-up job! There are some great ideas, and some great scenes. What bothers me is how simple it is to make a 'mind-boggling' film when you smash reality into such tiny pieces. I found myself getting rather used to and/or bored of Mima waking up from 'dreams' over and over again. The thing that needs to be considered is at what point does abnormality become the norm? There needs to be a better anchor in reality if you're going to surprise people with non-reality. The only analogy I can make at this very moment is a problem that plagued Mission Impossible 2...how many times can you have somebody take off a mask before it's no longer surprising? In the end this movie can't really stand up to many of the great psycho-thrillers. It was likened to a cross between Alfred Hitchcock and Dario Argento, and I'd have to say that it's definitely not up to snuff with either of the director's finer efforts. It's definitely a step in the right direction, however. Definitely worth a buy, but I wouldn't make it out as the classic people tout it to be.
