Veteran British actor and frequent genre co-star Pete Postlethwaite passed away at the age of 64 after a long battle with cancer. His death was confirmed over the weekend from friend and journalist Andrew Richardson, who reports he died peacefully on Sunday surrounded by friends and family.

While Postlethwaite may not be mainstream star to the general masses, Maniacs will remember him from his numerous roles in films which fall within the genre we love. Films such as Alien 3, The Usual Suspects, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, The Omen, Romeo + Juliet, DragonHeart, Hamlet and much more...

Steven Spielberg once described him as "the best actor in the world," a title that Peter would never have place upon himself due to his humble origins and uncanny humility. Even at the urging of his agent, the actor would not change his name to something more stage-like and preferred living quietly at his rural farmhouse in England and away from the lights of Hollywood.

The actor has been seen most recently in Inception, Solomon Kane, the recent remake Clash of the Titans and The Town. He was made an Officer of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth in 2004. He is survived by his wife, Jacqui, his son Will and daughter, Lily.

Sound off with your memories on Pete's performances down below. Or discuss it in our General Movie Forum.

He was always a really great actor. I think he had the best line in the Lost World-

"Remember that chap about twenty years ago? I forget his name. Climbed Everest without any oxygen, came down nearly dead. When they asked him, they said 'why did you go up there to die?' He said 'I didn't, I went up there to live'.

Guy was always quality in all his films....even way back to being the jerk by-the-book cop in Rutger Hauer's Split Second.

May God rest his soul

Ditto and ditto. A damn fine actor that made smaller roles seem epic.

I'm sad now.

Wow shocked I had no idea he was so sick. Coudn't tell in The Town and Inception he was supposed to look sick.  He did such a great job in The Town and my favorite movie, the one I remember the most, The Usual Suspects. RIP

Just saw him in The Town the other day.  I think The Town Extended Edition had an extra scene with too.  RIP Pete.

RIP to one of the best actors of recent times.

It's offtopic for Mania but for a good film starring Pete that you probably haven't seen I strongly recommend Brassed Off.

Excellent actor. He will be missed.

I normally don't comment about the various actors passing out. But as a Fantasy, Scifi, horror fan I have seen him in so many damn movies. A great actor who will surely be missed for a long time to come.
