Peter Jackson, the director of the fan-favorite Lord of the Rings trilogy, has announced his intention to attend the San Diego Comic-Con for the first time. This has drawn the notice of even the New York Times who confirmed Jackson's upcoming appearance via an email message.

"I'm thrilled that I finally have the opportunity," Mr. Jackson said in an e-mail message. "Neill is a tremendously talented young director, and he's made an extraordinary film, so it was important to me to come to San Diego to spread the word." He added that attendees will be in for "quite a ride."

Why is he attending the con? Jackson is coming in support of District 9, an upcoming sci-fi film by his protege Neill Blomkamp. The film is based on a short by the director and will be hitting theaters August 14, 2009.

Besides executive producing the Hobbit prequels, Jackson has other projects also coming out soon such as the Tintin trilogy and The Lovely Bones. Mania has quite a few staffers attending this year's Comic-Con so expect us to pass along the coverage of Jackson's thoughts then.

It's good to know Jackson will be there. Look forward to it.

Jackson being there doesn't matter to me cause I won't be there. But it's good that he's making time to support D-9 even though he's a busy boy. That film looks pretty good IMO and it is my pick for sleeper hit of the summer. So the buzz he'll generate will certainly help even if all he's asked about is The Hobbitt

You gotta wonder why he didn't do the Hobbit.  Did he think it would be too stressful, like the trilogy?  Did he think it wouldn't be as good and he didn't want to have his name as Director?  It really bugs me that he's not directing.

It sucks He's not Directing the Hobbit films, but Del torro is the perfict man for the job, think about it, if peter jackson did not exist and some one said they were going to make TLOTR trilogy, who would be the first guy to come to mind to direct it. The Hobit is being wrieten by the same team as the trilogy, and to me thats the most important thing.

District 9 looks pretty cool. It will be interesting to hear what PJ has to say about it.

He didn't direct the Hobbit because he got in a fight with New Line over royalties. It turned into a real personal thing between him and the head of New Line. When New Line realized that Sir Ian McKellan wouldn't come back to play Gandalf and a lot of the fans wouldn't watch without Jackson they begged him to be involved.

Btw what is up with this Tintin movie I keep hearing about. It dosnt sound interesting at all, yet Steven Spielberg is directing and Peter Jackson is producing.. And there going to make it a trilogy, what am I missing? Someone get me excited for this without slipping me viagra pills.

Wiseguy 6/7/2009 4:10:55 PM

Tin Tin is more of an european attraction. As a matter of fact it's supposed to be released in Europe a full 8 weeks ahead of the US release. I'm not all that excited about it myself except that PJ and Spielberg are directing.

PJ isn't directing to give his illegitimate long lost brother a chance at finally directing a film that has a chance of being more than just a marginal financial succes

I agree Chopsaki, I really have no interest in TinTin.  Even reading up on it and talking to people who "know" it it really does nothing for me.

As far as District 9 goes, I also think this looks pretty cool, though we're obviously going to be getting "hit with a message" of some sort. Though I will not be seeing it for the message, but for the entertainment value.
