Director Peter Weir has left the film SHANTARAM, a Warner Bros film which stars Johnny Depp.
"Peter moved on from this film because his interpretation of it differed greatly than that of the studio and producers," a Warner Bros. spokesman said. According to Variety, Weir had recently turned in a new script from Eric Roth which he supervised.
A new director has yet to be named, but production is still on schedule for 2007.
SHANTARAM is based on the life story of author Gregory David Roberts, a heroin addict incarcerated for a robbery who escapes prison and reinvents himself as a doctor in the slums of Bombay. His ties to the crime underworld there lead him to Afghanistan, where he partners with a mob boss locked in a battle with Russian criminals. - IMDB
