The tragic news broke this afternoon that Philip Seymour Hoffman has passed away. At this time he is believed to have died due to a drug overdose. The Academy Award winning actor for Capote (2005) was only 46 years of age.

His family released the following statement: “We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone. This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers.”

Hoffman was a triple threat in Hollywood as that he could play hero, villain, and fool. It is an incredible shame as he clearly had many great performances ahead of him. Which brings us to what films Hoffman was working on. God’s Pocket was released in January and A Most Wanted Man has also been completed. Happyish (a TV series) is in post production right now for Showtime. The big dilemma for Lionsgate may lay in his role as Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 and 2. Part 1 is credited on IMDB as in post-production. Part 2 on the other hand, is currently filming.

Regardless of the stage of what film Hoffman was working on, a great actor has been lost. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Hoffman family.

I know it's not a Mania type film, but his performance in Doubt was devastating.  I am so sad and heartbroken that such a truly talented artist could fall prey to a dug overdose.  Prayers for his family, who must be suffering so much right now.

Good night funnyman.

So much talent.. So little self control. Died with the needle still in his arm. How sad and ugly.

A couple of credible sources reported that he was supposed to pick up his kids Sunday morning.  He must have been desperate and hooked for him to have shot up heroin literally hours before he was to have tended to his children.  I had read (a couple years back) that he had been rehabilitated and drug free for 20 years - sad to see he wound up falling off the wagon, and the horrible price it cost him and his family...

So sad and sorry for him and his family and loved ones.

I can't feel any pity for this cat. He had what most people would kill for, fame, money and a thriving career.

What the fuck was he chasing?

ElBaz13 2/2/2014 6:13:30 PM

I'm in the same boat as you Wiseguy. Some unknown chick on Facebook is ripping at me for saying the same type of comment saying "hope you never have someone close to you die this way".

I feel bad for the cops and firemen who die in the line of duty. I feel bad for the people who get diagnosed with fatal diseases and die at a young age and there is nothing they can do about it. I don't care what people say. Drugs and alcoholism is not a disease. That can be prevented.

Hoffman had controled it and definitely had the money to do it and his family to remind him what he would lose if he fell on the wagon again. RDJ, Aerosmith and many more celebs got out of it. But for every RDJ, there is a River Phoenix, Heath Ledger, Corey Haim, Corey Monteith, Chris Farley and now P.S. Hoffman.

Yup, I gotta agree with the gents above, another fucken idiot commits suicide.  I loved his acting but can't feel sympathy when they go out like that.  He knew the dangers, we all know the dangers, we all have choices to make.

My sympathy goes to his children, the real victims of this situation.

Sad to see Hoffman go out, so talented, so young.  Addiction is a bitch.  Can't judge him...didn't walk in his shoes or know his demons.  Apparently he's been fighting it for quite awhile...unfortunately he lost the battle.  A lot less sympathy here for Hoffman than for the dummies who were done in speeding around at over 100 mph on public roads in a Porsche.

He was in boogie nights too right?  Breakout role?  Why don't friends and family just watch these guys closer, I would drop a dime on the drug dealers or even the star himself to keep him alive.  I guess it's easy to say without being there.  Hell he probably had enough money to hire somebody to keep him honest and alive.   These stories are becoming more often than not these days.  I wonder if the Mary Jane legalization is going to help or hurt?
