The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences presented the 2002-2003 Creative Arts Primetime Emmy Awards, for programs and individual achievements, at the 55th Annual Emmy Awards held at the Shrine Auditorium on Saturday, September 13. Highlights of the program will air on Friday, September 19 at 6 PM on E! Entertainment Television.
Walking down the red carpet were presenters Julian McMahon and Joely Richardson of NIP/TUCK and James Cromwell, who was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series, but lost to Charles S. Dutton for WITHOUT A TRACE. Dutton quipped in the press room, after earning his third award, that he already had an Emmy on each coast and this one would go back east.
Jennifer Garner of ALIAS presented the Outstanding Makeup For a Series (Non-Prosthetic) to her team of makeup artist on the show. Angela Nogaro, Diana Brown and Kaori Tuner accepted the award for the episode "The Counteragent". When asked why they selected this episode they commented that Garner's agent didn't recognize the actress standing next to her on the set. ALIAS's Jeff Habberstad also picked up Outstanding Stunt Coordination for his work in "The Telling" episode.
Joe Mantegna of JOAN OF ARCADIA presented an award to Christina Applegate for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for playing Amy in FRIENDS while the Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Miniseries, Movie or Special went to FRANK HERBERT'S CHILDREN OF DUNE, night one. In the press room the SIMPSONS staff, lead by Executive Producer Matt Groening, commented that the writers have to be really funny to be heard in the big room that they use for story meetings. He feels The Simpsons are ageless and won't age on the show just as Huckleberry Hound and Mickey Mouse remain the same. Hank Azaria also received Outstanding Voiceover Performance for various characters in THE SIMPSONS episodde "Moe Baby Blues" which was previously announced.
