Scoop Feedback:

July 16, 2003... With a $46 million dollar opening weekend it was bound to happen.

Josh Spector over at The Hollywood Reporter says that Disney is in early development on a sequel to PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN. According to Spector, the studio has already locked the principal PIRATES players including director Gore Verbinski, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and cast members Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. As well, the movie's screenwriters, Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, are thinking about where they could take the characters in a second adventure.

One week after its bow, the film is approaching the $80 million dollar mark at the box office. [The Hollywood Reporter.]

October 15, 2003... Fresh from his highest-grossing film to date, director Gore Verbinski has signed a deal that will see him helm PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 2 for Walt Disney Pictures. It appears as if all the major players save for villain Geoffrey Rush are returning for the second sailing including stars Johnny Depp, Keira Knightly, Orlando Bloom and producer Jerry "Everything I touch turns to gold" Bruckheimer.

But when will PIRATES 2 start filming? That's a good question. Right now everyone is waiting for the script to be delivered, from the same writing team that penned the first adventure (namely, Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott.) [Variety.]

October 21, 2003... Today's Variety reports that executives working at Walt Disney Pictures are considering making two sequels to this summer's smash hit, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, and that they would be both made at the same time. This kind of production was first attempted with the second and third BACK TO THE FUTURE films and was also used for THE MATRIX RELOADED and THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS as well as all three LORD OF THE RINGS movies.

Reportedly Disney has already approached the returning stars to see how they feel about committing to two sequels at once. Orlando Bloom shouldn't have any worries since he's already gone through the process playing Legolas in the RINGS pictures, while Johnny Depp and Keira Knightly are also both attached to star in one sequel at the present time.

If Disney does sway the cast members to jump onboard for two PIRATES sequels, they're going to need another script. Screenwriters Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott are hard at work on the second PIRATES sequel's script right now -- unless they split that one into two parts. [Source: Variety.]

December 10, 2003... An anonymous scooper contacted us today with what they claim might be the working title for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 2. "I work for [removed] from Fantasy II F/X in Burbank, Ca," writes our tipster. "I can't give you my name. I can tell you this, I just saw some composite artwork for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: TREASURES OF THE LOST ABYSS I'm not sure if that's just the working title or not."

Well, since the subtitle of the first PIRATES film was THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, and that was the name of Jack Sparrow's ship, it stands to reason that Disney may be thinking of using another pirate vessel in the title of the second film. But what's the Abyss and who owns it?

"The Lost 'ABYSS' is in references to the first pirate ship that sailed in the caribbean," explains the spy. "Sorry, that's all I know at this time. I have no information about the script. Disney had a rep here with the artwork. Very hush hush!"

So what did the artwork look like? Ah, that part we just don't know, matey.

[A yo-ho-ho to our anonymous poppet for sending the tip in.]
