By: Karl Schneider
Date: Thursday, September 07, 2006

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST will, barring an alien invasion, cross the $1 billion mark in worldwide box office receipts.

PIRATES will join TITANTIC and LOTR: RETURN OF THE KING as the only films to ever cross the mark.

The film has banked $414 million domestically while the rest of it's haul comes from the overseas market where it has been an exceptional sucess.

The next installment is expected in theaters on May 25, 2007.

Good lord, that's a lot of booty.

I guess I'm the only one that thought it lacked a story? Special effects aside, which were great, the film was boring...nothing happened.

I completely disagree riley74. This movie was one of the best summer movies in recent memory. It is fun, with lots of action, and a very good story. So you probably are the one of the few who thought it wasn't good, which is ok with me, but I had to give the other side of the equation.

Yeah, the story isn't the point. It's the adventure, the escape, the fun, and the humour. That's what Hollywood is missing a lot of the time.

Wow. Conrats to Disney...as if they needed more money! How much is part three going to make? 1.5 billion worldwide? Does Depp or any of the cast get any of the gate like Cruise usually gets? I'll bet Warner Bros. is looking at this and thinking "if we had only given the world the Superman film they wanted!"

I agree with you 100 percent riley74. That was the worst movie I've seen in quite a while (aside from Lady in the Water). I thought the first one was fairly refreshing because we hadn't seen anything like it in a while. It had a decent story and of course having Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush is always a good thing. But this time around they completely disbanded a story for senseless, silly action sequences. They only thing they improved upon from the first one is the score. Hans Zimmer wrote a much more engaging and thematically rich score than Klaus Badelt. I just hope ole' Gore Verbinski can do something a little more intelligent for the third (and unfortunately most likely not the final) installment.

For old times sakes: Superman Returns SUCKS!

Superman returns was a much better movie than pirates of the carribean.

Any movie that makes that much money must be a total escapist hooplehead fantasy.

Ony the mature audience viewed superman returns.

Is anyone else surprised by the quick release date of the third film? Did they film them back-to-back? I figured they'd give it till 2008 at least.

Wait? Superman is not total escapist "hoooplehead" fantasy? Interesting comment. I thought it was about a spandex & cape-wearing superhero from another planet that flies around, has almost infinite strength, and bullets bounce off of him. Yeah, that's realism at it's best for mature audiences. Back to Pirates: that is freakin' impressive. The scary thing is the 3rd one might top this one with audiences knowing it's the last one (like Return of the King.)
