The Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy introduced us to ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl’ in 2003, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest’ in 2006, and finally ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End’ to wrap the franchise in 2007. The adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), Blacksmith William Turner (Orlando Bloom), and his childhood crush Elizabeth Swan (Kiera Knightly), are revealed, with recurring roles by several other supporting characters. Together, these three embark on dangerous missions that take them to the high seas and the literally the ends of the earth, searching for legendary treasure or to rescue their compatriots. They encounter romance, mutiny, sea monsters, betrayal, and countless battles. The beautiful production of these films caused the world to embrace these tales, and fall in love with their storylines, characters, and all things Pirates.

All three movies in the trilogy were impressively directed by Gore Verbinski and produced by the ingenious Jerry Bruckheimer. They had the foresight to insist on a quality script, assemble a top notch production team, and secure a talented cast to transform the Disney attraction into a world-wide, record-setting film franchise phenomenon. Once the success of the first film was realized, the smartly developed the second and third movies cohesively back to back, and their stories tied together more so than they did with the first. The At World’s End closed with the scene of Jack Sparrow looking at a map that would lead him to the Fountain of Youth. It left audiences everywhere wondering if Disney would create another Pirates movie or if the movies would remain as a trilogy. For over two years, rumors have circled around a possible fourth Pirates film, and were laid to rest in September of 2009 when Disney made the announcement alongside Johnny Depp at the D23 Expo. The fourth installment is titled Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Filming begins this summer in Hawaii, and is scheduled for release in May, 2011.

Details have been slowly trickling out about the films development, to which we’ve categorized into the following:

Good News:

  • Johnny Depp is reprising his role as the mischievous, ever daring and plotting Captain Jack Sparrow! Depp has embodied this character in such a great way, and he has said it has been his favorite role to play. So rest assured POTC fans, we shall have our Captain just as he should be.

  • New actors will be introduced to the Pirates set as we are introduced to new characters to the film. Some of these great actors include Ian McShane as Blackbeard and Penelope Cruz as Blackbeard’s daughter.

Concerning News:

  • Director Gore Verbinski will have no part of this movie. The directorial mantle has instead turned to Rob Marshall. He is known most for his wonderful drama Memoirs of a Geisha and the dazzling musical Nine. Marshall has built his career on developing musicals (Annie, Chicago, Nine) and Broadway productions. Lacking any real action/adventure credits does give pause for concern, and hope that this new face at the helm doesn’t equate to disaster for this beloved property.

  • Both Orlando Bloom and Kiera Knightly will not be returning to the film. As of right now, it has not been revealed whether this is because their characters are not elements of the story, or if the actors wanted no part of it. Recasting their characters would be a colossal mistake, so we hope for the former.

Interesting News:

  • There is actually a book about pirates called “On Stranger Tides,” written by Tim Powers. This novel was originally published in 1988 and won the Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel that same year. The story of this tale is similar to that of the rumored plot line of the Pirates film: the searching for the Fountain of Youth.

As was mentioned earlier, this film is set to be released on May 20, 2011. Although this rabid fan has some worries and concerns for the movie, I am hoping for the best!
