The Pirates Steal it All

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Sunday, May 27, 2007

Since this is Memorial Day Weekend and the industry considers Monday’s numbers to be part of the weekend numbers, this isn’t the actual weekend box office report. The actual numbers for the 4 day weekend (including Monday) will be released on Tuesday afternoon. I’ll get back to you guys on the actual numbers when they’re released. For now, let’s see how the holiday weekend is faring. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End took the treasure thus far, accounting for 112.5 mil in box office receipts. The third installment also grabbed up 17 mil from Thursday showings which moves its total domestic total to 126.5 mil. Overseas, At World’s End pulled in another staggering 205.5 mil. This brings its total worldwide take in its first 3-4 days to 332 million in sales. We still have yet to figure in tomorrow’s box office sales.

When you include tomorrow’s totals, it will most likely have surpassed its predecessor’s opening weekend take from last year. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End grabbed up 135.6 mil in sales.

Let’s look at the other Pirates of the Caribbean movies and their opening weekend numbers…

Curse of the Black Pearl vs. Dead Man’s Chest vs. At World’s End Comparisons:

Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl:

Budget:               140 million
Opening Weekend: 46.6 million
Total Domestic:   305.4 million
Total Foreign:      348.5 million
Worldwide Total: 653.9 million

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest

Budget:                   225 million
Opening Weekend: 135.6 million
Total Domestic:       423.3 million
Total Foreign:          642.3 million
Worldwide Total:     1.065 billion

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

Budget:                    300 million
Opening Weekend: 112.5 mil so far (Monday hasn’t been accounted for)
Total Domestic:        126.5 mil so far (with Thursday’s numbers)
Total Foreign:           205.5 million so far
Worldwide Total:      332.0 million

Shrek the Third landed in 2nd place this weekend with a very respectable 51.0 mil in sales. It turned out to be a great alternative for kids and with its length sitting at 1 hr and 30 minutes; it had quite a few showings per day on its 4,172 different theaters. The third installment in the Shrek franchise has pulled in 201.3 mil in its domestic run over the past 2 weeks while also grabbing another 14.2 mil overseas. Its worldwide take is now at 215.6 mil.

Shrek vs. Shrek 2 vs. Shrek the Third Comparisons:

Shrek Numbers:
Budget:              60 million
Total Domestic: 267.6 million
Total Foreign:    216.7 million
Worldwide Total: 484.4 million

Shrek 2 Numbers:
Budget:               150 million
Total Domestic:   441.2 million
Total Foreign:      479.4 million
Worldwide Total: 920.6 million

Shrek 3 Numbers:
Budget:               160 million
Total Domestic:   201.3 million
Total Foreign:      14.2 million
Worldwide Total:  215.6 mil so far

Spider-Man 3 finished up in 3rd place this holiday weekend while being pulled out of 601 theaters. Spidey webbed another 13.7 mil which had it break the 300.0 mark here in the states. Its total domestic take is now at 303.3 million and overseas, it has pulled in 499.1 million. Just $900,000 shy of that 500.0 mil mark overseas but I’m sure by tomorrow when the final numbers are tallied with Monday included, it will have it. Its total worldwide take is now sitting at 802.4 million.

Spider-Man vs. Spider-Man 2 vs. Spider-Man 3 Comparisons:

Spider-Man Numbers:
Budget:               139 million
Total Domestic: 403.7 million
Total Foreign:     418.0 million
Worldwide Total: 821.7 million

Spider-Man 2 Numbers:
Budget:              200 million
Total Domestic: 373.5 million
Total Foreign:     410.1 million
Worldwide Total: 783.7 million

Spider-Man 3 Numbers:
Budget:              258 million
Total Domestic: 303.3 mil so far
Total Foreign:    499.1 mil so far
Worldwide Total: 802.4 mil so far

All three of these films had their previous installments ruling that perspective summer’s box office so it’s only fitting that they finish up in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place this weekend since they were all released in the same month.

Liongate’s thriller Bug takes 4th place this weekend pulling in 3.2 mil in 1,661 theaters so far. With Monday’s numbers, I’m sure it will be around 5-6 mil. The film has averaged $1,962 per showing in its debut weekend.

Fox Searchlight’s Waitress continues to impress analysis expectations. The film was added to 394 more screens this weekend making its grand total of screen coverage at 510 total. Yet, here it stands in 5th place taking in 3.0 mil this weekend so far. Very respectable for such a small release taking higher spots over larger marketed films.

The horror sequel 28 Weeks Later lands behind in 6th place scaring up another 2.4 mil in its third week of release. It has taken in 23.6 mil in its release here in the states. Another point which I find strange is it’s already being pulled out of some theaters. The theater coverage dropped 292 screens from its release and this is only the third weekend.

Universal’s Georgia Rule follows right behind in 7th place dropping 50.5 % from last weekend with 1.8 mil in box office sales. It has grabbed up only 16.2 mil in its three weeks of release. Seeing how it’s been matched up against Spider-Man 3, Shrek 3 & Pirates 3, this isn’t all that surprising.

Paramount/Dreamwork’s Disturbia continue to add onto its box office totals taking 8th place with 1.7 mil in sales. Shia LaBeouf’s thriller has taken 74.2 mil in its 7 weeks of release with a budget of only 20 million.

I did a double take when I saw this one. Disney’s Wild Hogs comes out of nowhere taking in 1.0 mil in sales which puts it in 9th place this weekend. Yes, a movie released at the beginning of March has landed in the top 10 chart for this Memorial Day Weekend. The comedy has been out of the top 10 chart for a few weeks now (ranking 17th last week) but since this is a time for families to get together. As such, it seems like the perfect go to movie for that demographic. I am surprised that the families could even find the movie still in their theaters though.

Fracture pulled in another 1.0 mil in the final 10th place this weekend, dropping 52 % from its previous weekend. The thriller has taken 36.6 mil in its 6 weeks of release here in the states.

All of these movies, minus the first 3, may shift after Monday’s numbers are tallied. The actual numbers for the 4 day weekend report will be released on Tuesday afternoon. I’ll talk to you more then.

Were there any doubts that Pirates 3 wouldn't be number one? Maybe the Weinsteins thought so. But was the budget for this one really 300 million dollars?? That would make it the most expensive movie in the Outer Rim, beating out Spider-Man 3, King Kong, etc. Pirates 3 is a good movie, though.

snallygaster • May 27, 2007, 08:14pm •
For what it's worth, IMDB estimates the Pirates 3 production budget at $200M, though I've seen other sources putting it at $300M. I'm guessing there were some budgetary overlaps with the last two Pirates movies, making their individual budgets more vague.

Jarrod - are you sure about those numbers for the lower portion of the list? Boxofficemojo is reporting the following for numbers 5-10:

5. Waitress $3,075,000
6. 28 Weeks Later $2,480,000
7. Georgia Rule $1,856,000
8. Disturbia $1,759,000
9. Wild Hogs $1,092,000
10. Fracture $1,075,000

I just thought it was a bit odd that 28 Weeks Later had completely fallen out of the Top Ten already, so I decided to do some investigating. Looks like Waitress also made a bit of a leap, as it was pushed to more theaters this weekend even though it's still mostly playing in urban/art house/indie types of theaters and hasn't reached the cineplexes yet.

Hah, Snally. It seems that BoM has already updated the Box Office Numbers from this morning to this afternoon.

And those numbers are going to change another few times from your list above to tomorrow to Tuesday when the totals are actually tallied and confirmed.

I was actually hesitant about writing this one up and it's why I said in the first part of it that these numbers are still being tallied. Looks like I was right in saying it..

The numbers have already changed twice within 5 hours this afternoon.

I'll get a "Special" Box Office Report written when the numbers start looking more confirmed tomorrow afternoon.

sorry to say this, i do not agree with these predictions given from some of the maniac.. i truly believe that the transformers will probably end shattering all box office records. it has a lot of potential and dont forget that the birth place of where it was created japan. it will open world wide just like all movies. but japan is big on this kind of show and so is the us still. its new to the movie market and has never been done. after seeing the previews and hearing from thise who have got to see the pre screening, it will blow all those other movies away..."autobots, transform and roll out"

Scorpion, put down your Top 10 Box Office Winners and I'll add it to the list.

Snally, I've updated the Box Office Report just now...lol Apparently the numbers have changed 3 times today.

They'll still change tomorrow so I'll be writing up another again soon anyway.

For now though, the box office report has been updated and this one should be changed very soon.

No surprises here.

Jarrod - I was actually surprised to see your box office report today instead of tomorrow, given that the holiday weekend will have the box office in flux for awhile. For that matter, I'm planning on seeing Pirates 3 tomorrow, so my $7 will be part of its Monday box office.

Scorpion - before you give Transformers the top slot in your list, keep in mind the predictions are for US domestic box office, not worldwide. There's a signficant difference - for instance, if the predictions were based on worldwide, I'd have put Harry Potter higher as that franchise traditionally does better on the world market than the US market.

Did anybody stay past the closing credits? I heard there was a surprise at the end. I don't know if I could sit there for all the credits. This POTC movie was pretty good and I have not been a fan of the franchise. The three hour running time does get to you, though. The movie does close up all the loose ends left by the previous movies. Hopefully, they will let series end because I don't think it has anywhere to go from here. I feel the same way about Shrek. As for Spiderman, I can go either way with it. I would like to see Peter and Mary Jane finally married but I don't know what else they can do with the characters.

browbeat • May 28, 2007, 01:07am •
I knew to stay for after the credits. I was saying "we've had the monkey, we've had the dog, maybe this time it'll be the parrot."

BUT the scene we did get was wonderful and brought an endearing smile to my face. Good way to close this trilogy.

I loved the 2nd Pirates movie, but this one was sort of so-so to me. I can't see myself watching it over and over and over again like the first two. HOWEVER, as rumors are flying about a fourth installment, I hope it involves Depp, Rush, and Keith Richards. Should be fun.

kingofmovies • May 28, 2007, 05:37am •
I thought Pirates was good.....Spider Man 3 could have been better (more Venom)......Shrek 3 was funny....But Im losing sleep over Transformers...as a huge Michael Bay fan I cant wait until July 3 (at midnight) for the screening......I believe Transformers will be #1 this summer....yeah whatvever call me crazy....with Bay and Spielberg at the helms of the film Its truly built for success....
