Scoop Feedback:

July 26, 2001... While promoting this weekend's PLANET OF THE APES, actor Mark Wahlberg was asked about how open he might be to coming back for a sequel. Wahlberg quickly answered, "If Tim [Burton] wants to, I'd love to, but it really depends on him."

He adds, "The coolest thing about the experience was meeting Tim the person, getting to know a fantastic human being. It was a really tough shoot for me physically--I was getting beaten up for most of the movie-- I still rushed to work every day just to hang out with Tim. I never had so much fun, felt so comfortable on a set or around somebody. It was really, really special."

August 20, 2001... Boy, Tim Burton sure sounds grouchy about his PLANET OF THE APES movie, lately. And don't even think about asking if he's interested in doing a sequel.

While talking to the UK's Independent to promote the film, the director was asked if would be interested in doing a second run on the PLANET OF THE APES. Burton answered, "The idea of doing a sequel--I'd rather jump out of the window, I swear to God."

The helmer then explained some of his aggravation making the film, saying, "They give you a script, and you do a budget based on that, and say, 'This movie would cost $300 million to make,' and then they treat you like a crazy, overspending, crazy person. It's like, 'Well, you gave me the script.' I'm fascinated by the studio technique that sort of leaves you bloodied, beaten and left for dead right before you're supposed to go out and make a great movie for them."

September 5, 2001... Tim Roth sounds open to reprising his role of the villainous chimp Thade for a potential sequel to PLANET OF THE APES.

While talking to SCIFI.COM, Roth spoke of his feelings on the project, as well as director Tim Burton, saying, "If Tim [Burton] wanted to do it I would. He is tired. He may change his mind, but he's had to deal with the press for so long. He went straight from editing to a plane to start talking to press. He's exhausted. If he did want to, I would be interested in doing that, because it would be a great exercise to revisit a character and see what else you could do with him. I've never done that. Just as a challenge, it would be fascinating."

November 14, 2001... Producer Richard Zanuck has been talking about a sequel to Tim Burton's PLANET OF THE APES.

While talking to syndicated columnists Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith, Zanuck suggested that a sequel might come in 2003. Zanuck explains, saying, "We don't want to rush the film into theaters next year -- we'd rather buy extra wanna-see time for the sequel."

He adds, "Right now, we're tossing around ideas for the story. We want to take our time and get it right."

There's no word from the producer on if Burton, Wahlberg or anyone else from the first film might be returning.

July 3, 2002... Producer Richard Zanuck, who gave us Tim Burton's re-imagined PLANET OF THE APES last summer, has revealed Twentieth Century Fox isn't all that hot on getting a sequel into production any time soon.

"The idea is to space it out now," Zanuck said. "The studio doesn't think that a sequel has to be made immediately. They made a lot of money off the picture, but the theory, at least what they're telling me, is that every three years or more [they will make one]... They don't want the franchise to just burn out and be finished again for another 20 years. I don't know whether they're right or not, but that seems to be the idea."

So what's the idea for the sequel. Will it pick up with Mark Wahlberg living in an ape Washington D.C.? "They have a deal with Mark Wahlberg in place, but I don't know what their ultimate plan is," Zanuck said.

Two things: Forget about Tim Burtain and Mark.
Go back to the planet with two or three humans, they search for the main charactor who isn't in the film. They encounter the apes, nuth said.
I personally think this whole thing has gone to the dogs. Meaning that the old ape films and new ones should at least be tied to gether somehow. Earth wasn't distroyed in the last old film, it was changed.

Get more Bloody-Disgusting news

When the credits finally rolled on Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes remake back in 2001, I was in shock. The film was such a disaster that I was sure a sequel would never show its ugly face. I guess I was kind of right... I learned this week through a regular tipster that a PREQUEL to the remake is officially out to directors. Apparently the apes will return... and just like in the movie, there will be no humans there to see it. Case closed.

The above comment is not by me, it's just what they said at the Bloody-Disgustin news site. I have been waiting for a sequel to this movie since it came out. I just love these films, and think they just never make enough of them. Movies like King kong,Jurassic park, etc. They make toooo many horror and comedies these days and don't make the creature films that us sci-fi nuts love. So 20th Century Fox bring it on. I'll be there the first day to see it.

I liked the 2001 version of Planet of the Apes. It was a lot like the novel by Pierre Boulle. I do admit that it lacked the darker atmosphere of the novel and 1968 movie. I have no comment as far as a prequel. However, I would like to see a sequel.

I loved all of the old Planet of the Apes Movies when I was a kid and appreciate them more even now. I also really loved the new one whenit came out. I'm with you Richard I love the creature films and although I don't really complain about movies I wouldn't mind seeing more of them. On an unrelated not i have some hopes that this Cloverfield movies can fill the void a bit.

You know what...I actually think it would be a good idea to do another Apes movie...I always liked them and the premise they brought to the screen...

I say bring in a new crew and actors. Do something different with the series...

I loved the remake. Yeah, there were a lot of flaws in the script and we can't blame Tim Burton for that. But the vision was fffantastic!

FMC has been running "Channel of the Apes" all Thanksgiving weekend and my TV has not budged off that channel and the DVR is almost full from this great 40th anniversary special. WOW! Has it been that long? Kinda scary...

I hope they do another and I hope Tim Roth reprises his role as Thade and Helena Bonham Carter as Ari and Michael Clark Duncan as Attar. As far as Marky Mark? Well, I can only blame his acting for the blandness of the character; Leo Davidson. It was as if he didn't have his heart in the role, you know?

I'll be waiting with apt enthusiasm for the greenlight.
