Kim Hunter, who fleshed out one of the genre's favorite characters in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Dr. Zira from THE PLANET OF THE APES films, died in New York at the age of 79.
Hunter played Zira, the chimp with a heart of gold, in the original APES, and two sequels, BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES and ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES. While that might be her most cherished genre credit, Hunter won an Oscar for her portrayal of Stella in 1951's A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE.
She is already missed.
